I am looking for new roller bearings for my intermediate gear (LR part no. 599869). I have managed to source all of the other bearings for the transfer case from my local bearing supplier so I have ended up with quality Japanese or USA products instead of the Britpart rubbish.

Trouble is, I cannot find a manufacturer's part number for the roller bearings that sit inside the intermediate gear. Does anyone know if these bearings exist outside of the Land Rover universe, and if so what these are called or how I might reference them to a bearing supplier?

i wouldnt worry about those unlike the ball bearings they arent under anywhere near the same stress due to surface area,shaft is likely to go first
 
Thanks James. I did wonder about whether they were actually worth swapping out, as they still run very nicely and the shaft is hardly worn at all.

the ball bearings i do use britpart for the branded ones not the pattern for instance rear lay shaft bearing rtc1412 bp do a pattern for 3.32 and rhp for 23,rhp will last years and the other the rollers are likely to drop out whilst fitting the shaft
 
Yep - I did my gearbox with Britpart bearings throughout. It is still sitting on the bench undriven, waiting for the transfer case rebuild. I look at it from time to time and wonder whether I should strip it down again and replace all the Britpart with SKF/Timken or whatever, as it will never be easier to do and I do have a spare set of gaskets......

Hmm - Could be cheap insurance!

i rebuild amongst others these for a living and id use branded if you can, the 2 -3 pound ball bearings are often cheese but with the roller bearings pattern seem to work ok as they arent under stress
 
Yeah - I think I've pretty much come to that conclusion. Probably worthwhile doing it now while I have the chance.

I'll put in an order with my bearing supplier and see how many they can do. At least it should all come to pieces easily enough!
 
Now you've got me worried about my Britpart wheel bearings in my newly rebuilt axles..... :-(
oddly with those they seem to be ok,a lot seemed to have used them with no issues,though i tend to buy timken by choice i do fit britpart pattern if customer supplies them, i have seen very many issues with gearboxes though
 
Ah - well that is encouraging. If the wheel bearings drop to bits eventually I will use decent replacements. In the meantime, I will rebuild the gearbox to save myself pain later on.

Well - four years later I finally got her underway under her own power!

BUT - she has a tendency to jump out of first gear - almost like it doesn't properly engage. When I rebuilt the box I did not really know what I was looking for by way of wear - so I just changed the bearings and put it all back together again largely untouched. This approach seems to have bitten me in the arse.

I'm quite prepared to strip it down again and replace parts, but short of ordering everything, I really don't have a lot to go on in terms of what's knackered and what's not. Are pattern gears worth using or are they as bad as the bearings? Being in NZ means it is a pain to get a few bits. Much better to order the lot and get a proper shipment, rather than airfreight one or two parts.

Any advice gladly received.
 
I'd go nuclear on it. Including ordering lots of shims.

Reason being parts supplies are drying up. A major manufacturer of series box parts went bust recently.

Plus air freight....

Could be your 1/2 syncro hub, mine did exactly this but with 2nd gear. I've used pattern gears and even a layshaft in my suffix A box and been fine for the last 8 years or so, much better to strip it all down and assess what needs sorting.
 
Thanks Samc88. You're the first person I've seen reporting that they've used pattern gearbox parts with no issues! As they appear to be the only ones that are actually available and we have no choice but to use them, it's good to know that they CAN work.

Did a road test for the first time yesterday. Apart from jumping out of first, the rest of the gears appear to work but are VERY noisy. Also the overdrive makes a horrible noise when engaged, so I only went about 50 metres with that. I suspect that the clearances are wrong as well as the gears being worn.

It appears that if I change enough stuff inside, I can rebuild this box to suffix D specs. I didn't appreciate this until now. Presumably the actual box castings are all the same and the only thing that differs is the internals. I may go that route, as I will likely be changing just about everything inside. Does anyone know if this is true - I can turn a B into a D by changing to the later components?

Not an expert but I think the issue with what you suggest will be with changes to reverse idler and related parts.
