The problem with the td5 intercooler is the inlet and outlet are on opposite sides, Were as the 300 ones are both on the same side.
With a bit of jigery pokery with the pipe work it could be made to work
And from what I've heard they do make a difference. Although it would be easier to fit some thing made for the job or with at least the inlet and outlet on the same side.

Some thing like this would be easier to make work, With a couple of 90 degree bends.
Provided it fits in the hole.

An intercooler on its own won't GIVE you anymore power. What it will do is help you to hold on to what ever power you have got due to reducing thermal losses in air temperature.
Bolting an intercooler on without adjusting the pump or boost pressure will have little or no affect in everyday driving, you'd only notice a difference in hot temperatures or when towing.

Not as much as you'd think.
If you can imagine a drain pipe full of tennis balls you put a ball in at one end, a ball comes out of the other, not the same ball so you don't have to wait for the ball to run all the way through the pipe.
Same sort of thing with an intercooler its already full of air when you start so when it comes on boost you just move the air that's already in there
Agreed but it will take longer for the system to hit full boost. Not much experience of diesels but done a fair bit with petrol charged vehicles in the past, lads would often fit the biggest IC known to man expecting huge power gains only to find out it took a week for the thing to "come on boost".
