will prob only see a small difference with just intercooler, to get full benefit of the uprated intercooler a tweek of the fuel pump would be needed and prob uping the amount of boost as well.

You dont need to do the turbo. Mine goes very well with Allard intercooler and tweeked pump. Its fuel efficient when you want it to be and fast when you want it to be but not at the same time:D

Vnt would be nice!! I just don't see the point in making you landy more powerful by spending a fortune on an intercooler.. Then missing out a free mod this gives big performance! Seems daft to not go all the way!

Karlos28 you could tweek the turbo but how much is safe? Mine runs 16psi on full boost. My Defender has 145k miles on it. The engine is good but she is getting a little long in the tooth to start overloading everything with a high power engine. I guess she is running about 135bhp. The centre box is removed, EGR valve, viscous fan and Allard intercooler fitted. She really is fast enough or maybe I am getting old and boring!
If you are going to tune yours more highly, dont forget to do the brakes. Most Defender brakes are not great. Mine had uprated brakes fitted by the previous owner. The MOT tester said they were the best brakes he had ever tested on a Defender.

16psi is higher than standard anyway! if its getting long in the tooth, why try and increase the power if you are worried about overloading it!? mine is bog standard has done 145 thou and im happy with it.. however if i was going to, id do it all.. go big or go home ;-)
