Did a search and found a few threads on up rating, cleaning and changing hoses due to delaminating. But think I may need to change my intercooler.

The front face is in poor condition and the fins are rusted, but also lots of the fins are bent over. I tried to straighten them with pliers, but got terribly bored and also they won't stay in place and ping back.

It's a 1995 model 300tdi Defender with 189,000 miles. Are the standard Defender intercoolers the same as Disco or are they specific to the Defender?

So options are? Leave it, change for a good S/H (are they all likely to be in this condition) or save some serious cash for a big intercooler. How do these fit do you need to remove the struts in front of the radiator.

To be fair it is pretty nippy and there is no need to tune it up, especially with the milage.

Thoughts?

replace it with a good second hand one, as far as i know 300tdi and 200tdi intercoolers differ but defender and disco ones are the same

No reason to think all S/H ones will be in poor condition.
Some people (me for instance) fitted an uprated intercooler to their 300TDi almost from day-one so I have the genuine intercooler sitting in the shed in pefect, as-new condition.
Not for sale i'm afraid (keeping it "just in case") but it shows there are good ones out there.

Kes i,m doing that same job on ma 110.

I get an air noise at high revs and i believe the elbow rubber hose has gone.

I ,m also preety sure the metal pipe inbetween the hoses is bent slighty and is letting air in/out.

Got new silicone hoses today and a genuine landrover pipe from the dodgy bay. My intercooler has bent fins and is in poor condition, trying to source a replacement and i,ve found some on on Ex Mod spares here.

Pricey but it will be genuine parts. I cant find a decent second hand one fur love or money:eek:

Silly question:

Any point in putting an uprated intercooler on a normally tuned 300tdi?

Personally from experience I wouldnt bother though no doubt many will disagree. I did mine on a disco and was a bit disappointed to be honest. Even though I was able to push the tuning a little further it was nt worth the outlay IMO. Most noticeable difference was the usual fuel pump mod and that costs nothing. I did add a big intercooler to a defender that had a 2.8 isuzu engine that previously had no intercooler at all as standard. Than made a massive difference!

I don't really see the point on a normally tuned engine but everyone has their own idea on it, I have a stainless pipe from my intercooler to inlet manifold, after driving hard I touched this pipe and it was cold so it tells me the air is cool enough

How is the TD5 intercooler different to the 300? And how difficult is it to fit?

Are we talking cheap secondhand?

Not too bothered about tuning, just looking at options, would rather stay standard if I can get one.
