i was 17 and i had a rover metro cover started in jan then in the nov (18then) i changed the policy to the disco cost me a extra 100 of the queens english ... but the next year went up to 1300 fully comp wen i was 18 !! not to bad cost thing the cheapest on them websites wer around 2 n half...

now 19 adrain flux gone down to 3rdparty TF and it was 800 with windscreen and keycar cover ....
no need fully comp as they will right my car off and the excess i will av to pay i will be out of pocket ...

I could go for a S3, if i could get something decent for 2K, do you reckon?

Is the performance "safe" on a S3 though?
 
A series 3 landy is a cracking buy...not only can you get reasonable insurance but you can throw it around off road and it'll make you smile...a lot. Its not a hot hatch but it'll do the speed limit, eventually..lol..and you can learn a lot of mechanical stuff dead easy. You'll have to..!!

Get a diesel and a manual.

Totally agree Storm, if I didn't have a big motorway commute every day, I'd have done exactly that.
 
Ta, i'd be looking to do some off roading too, my dads got a classic and a 90, he doesnt take them laning, but i do some servicing and work on them now and again :)
 
I thought the Diesels in the S3 was a bit shoddy?

Whats the performance and economy like out on the 2.25 Petrol?

What is the performance like? I know its not going to be quick atall, but i don't want to be sat on a motorway only been able to do 50 :lol:
 
We used to have a S3 lightweight 2.25 petrol, and that used to go really well. If you put an overdrive on it then short motorway stints shouldn't be a problem. I've been told the diesel is a bit of a slug, but there's something about it that's always appealed to me. Having said that, I'm a bit of a dieselhead lol try both and see what you think
 
I found Admiral and their sister company were the cheapest, 21 and my insurance quote for a Disco is £1300 fully comp.

What year was it mate? As I said before, I'm fairly sure that anything over 15 years old falls into classic insurance with some companies (Footman James for example).
 
93.

They don't insure any Disco's on classic apparently, and with footman james you have to be 25 to have a normal policy.

I have my 94 disco on a classic policy with Lancaster.

If you can get a Series for £700 go for it as its a bargain.
You shuold pick up a good 1 for less than 2K.
I had a S2a when i was 19 and loved it.

I had an SJ, we took it on the Suzuki Rhino Rally, they are absolutley great little motors and brilliant off road, long drives can be a bit tiring though.

A nicely kept and tuned S3 with O/D will chew motorways at 65/70 if you want, we took ours from London to Cornwal many times camping, i found the trip to be part of the fun, being ex-military in original finish also gathered interested people at the motorway stops:) This was 15 years ago though.

I have just got a disco but i still miss the series - proper landrovers.:D:D

BTW get the cheapest insurance possible, they are all crap when it comes to a claim, dont ask how i know.:(
 
I'd rather have a series than a Suzi :p But will look into both.

I'm just going through ebay ads, and classic car looking for some series 3, with the petrol engine seeing what can be had for about 1.5k ish... :)

That can be a problem, i tuned my last S3 to the limit, new head, valves etc, carb replaced, the works and the absolute best i ever got was 18mpg if driving like a pushchair:( Thats the reason i got a disco this time - still need the spanners but at least it wont drain the wallet all the time
