Tried to sort out my insurance today, got a 1998 Defender SW300Tdi, what a F****n performance, 1st company tried to do it on t'internet, but they/their computer thought my motor was a Td5, so I rang them up and pointed out that it was in-fact a Tdi, "OK no problem sir 1 minute please....... Oh yes no problem that will be another £150 on the premium though". I pointed out that they were the same thing with a different engine, got nowhere so told them to stick that. Next company recognised my motor, but then I tried to explain that I had a steering guard on it, and quieried whether this constituted a modification or not? (I remember reading a thread regarding A Bars on here). After much explaining what a steering guard was, they spoke to their underwriters who refused to insure it because of this "Modification". 3rd company, recognised my motor so I just sorted it out on T'internet, and i'll ring them up in a couple of weeks and say I've fitted a steering guard and hope for the best.
How do you good people who mod your vehicles go on with insurance? Or am I just talking to the wrong companies?? I just contacted the first 3 results on Compare the Meercat.
Sorry for long thread, but a bit confused:confused::confused::confused:

I use Adrian Flux.

Last year I rang them up and said " I've added a winch bumper & winch". "Fine" they said, "No problemo". No premium increase either.

I've just had my renewal through. Sent them an email "I've just fitted a heavy duty rear bumper & am about to fit a snorkel".

"No problem, just let us know when your snorkel is fitted".

They understand about 4x4 and off-roading etc. You don't have to beat it into them. Prices are pretty fair too.

Ditto - Flux and NFU (National Farmers Union) both good!

NFU - Just don't mention "off roading" at all when you speak to them or they will boo you off and won't even gove you a quote Ive heard..

I'm with NFU, no probs whatsoever. When I fitted new wheels I called them to report it and they didn't care.

I use Road Sure for my modded Disco. All mods declared. Biggest issue I originally had was mentioning a winch. Most companies don't like because of the uprated bumpers required to hold them and the potential for causing damage to third parties.

On a limited milage policy I pay £180 fully comp but dont earn any no claims.

I pay £300 (just renewed again) with NFU. I'm covered fully comp including business use for myself and the missus and that also includes towing broken down vehicles. All mods are also declared (there are quite a few). As long as I don't do anything to the engine they are happy with any other modifications.

so does that mean you cant put the head back on when its fixed

Thanks for all your comments, I'll see how it goes with these clowns seeing as I've already started, but I certainly know who I'll be ringing next year, thanks a lot.

I've just gone with Adrian Flux , found them helpful, no silence or drawing of breath when I told them about mods, they also insure "like for like" some places will insure your modded motor but repair it to standard spec, they don't always mention this, also I saved some money and could understand what they were saying.

footmanjames for me, last year was £429, unlimited milage, all mods declared like the 300tdi, wheels, new steering wheel, disc brakes, etc.

Adrian Flux - covered all mods and it has been a write off, had a hell of a job getting cover anywhere else. Not too happy with Audio equipment cover though - Max Insured £45 Audio Excess £45 - wtf! But had messed around for so long just had to get it insured in time for the inspection.

I use Lancaster, all mods listed. Although I was amused that they stated that H.L. was fitted with "different guards" :hysterically_laughi

Different guards - I like that! Adrian Flux all the way for me, been with them for years on all my cars (all modified) and no-one comes close.
