Hi everyone,

I need to insure my Defender as a 2nd car - as my no-claims in on my main car.

Now the complication - I need to include my 21 year old son on the Defender Insurance. He’s got 2 years no-claims, but is now at University and no longer owns a car.

The Defender is a 2006 TD5 Ragtop and we do about 8000 miles a year.

Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Phone around a lot of insurance companies /brokers and get quotes, springs to my mind.

Have a look in the back of the LR usual mags and start calling them.

Not sure what other advice / suggestions you might want TBH.

Cheers

Phoned round loads. But I’ve never owned a car that is treated so differently by Insurance companies - it’s ridiculous!

The NFU are brilliant (far better than anyone else I’ve found over the years) but they will no longer cover my specific requirement.

So I’m looking to see if someone else has been in a similar situation and has a potential solution.

Thought that’s what forums are for.

But if you haven’t or can’t help - no worries.

What your describing is a classic case of Daddy putting little Johnny on his policy so he can try to save some cash. Insurers are wise to this so you aren't going to get a great deal of support / sympathy.
Your lad would be better insuring himself as the main driver with you named. It's more than likely him that will crash it so better if in his name, otherwise you will have no no-claims for your other car either.

Discokids, you’re miles wide of the mark here.

What you’re referring to is where ‘Jonny’ wants to be the main driver and ‘Daddy’ wants to insure the car to save some money.

The Defender is mine, it resides at my house, and I’m the main driver. But I want to make it available to my 21 year old son, when, on the odd occasion, he comes home for the weekend or holiday.

So to be clear, I’m not trying to be cute or trying to get one over on Insurance companies. I just own 2 cars and want to add my son to one of them - and it has to be the Defender.

Thanks.

It's not old enough to be considered a classic so you're probably going to be paying through the arse regardless. I'm insured on one of my fathers cars too, a 1.2L vw polo. That's around £550 annually. I'm 23 and also insured on my 1968 landy. However I could only afford that due to it being a classic. I'd shop around though as lancaster insurance offered me cover for 1200 a year, then admiral gave me it for around 330. I was reccomended lancaster as a friend is insured for around £50 a year with them.

You could try a multi-car policy - Lancaster do them, it spreads the risk and costs a bit or a black box. The problem with somone of 21 is the damage they can do and a Defender can do a lot.

Maybe so, and I don't doubt you for a minute, but think of it from the insurers point of view. They've heard it all before and all they want is your cash and as much of it as possible.

You will get it on 4x4 insurance and not need your no claims.
You are insuring an 06 defender for a 21 year old, that is what the companies will see and price it on that basis.
