So my insurance renewal has just come through from Adrian Flux. A little more than usual so I decided I'd try Sureterm Direct who are currently running a Modified Land Rover of the Year competition in conjunction with LRO magazine. So I decided to "Challenge Sureterm" as they're calling it, stating they will endeavour to beat competitors@ 4x4 quotes.
Cut a long story short, the cheapest they could get was £750. This , they say , was due to the fact it was a cat C write off when I bought it 6 years ago, although it was repaired professionally and all the relevant VIC etc was done and I've never had any problems with it before for insurance purposes. So in effect it's going to cost me MORE to insure a vehicle that in the event of a claim, the company will pay out LESS on. (however, this would have been offset when I bought it originally by the low initial purchase price).
BUT this was the best part ,I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "It's also down to the fact it's a heavily modified Freelander as nobody seems to have any experience of insuring Freelanders like yours I'm afraid". So if that's the case , then basically the companies willing to insure are just plucking figures out of the air.
Oh dear. Looks like I'll have to sell it after all.
Unless Adrian Flux can do better with their quote that is.
Think it's time to get the bus....................................................................................or finish that Lightweight on the drive.

Always a bit of a minefield insurance. They definitely don't like modified stuff - but having said that you were talking to "specialist" insurers.

The insurance FC on our Freelander (bog standard L Series tractor) is about £250 over here. Our 22 year old daughter pays about £500 FC on her £5K 2010 Mazda Demio. What I really couldn't get my head around though was our son at 17 insured a wannabe roadracer Rover Tomcat for £50 TPFT!

Its not a legal requirement to have insurance over here.

change insurer, plenty around that would insure it without question for a lot cheaper than that! go speak to the meerkat or the fat welshman off telly and I'm sure you'll find a cheaper quote from someone more willing to work for your business

+1 to the above. change insurer. none of them seem to care about loyalty any more, so just move. I went with A-plan in the west midlands - I have no affiliation with them at all, just saying worth a try.

Good Luck.

Post Code, what modification been done and whether you shave your own legs seems to be the priority. :(

just done mine. I got a quote from A Plan then told adrian flux (who i with) saved over 130 quid from adrian flux's renewal with mods. i would of gone with A Plan but they never got back to me

I spoke to both Adrian Flux and Sureturm and decided they were both taking the p..s. I have decided to use only factory kit for any mods I might do. This way I can use a regular insurance policy and save several hundred quid in the process.

I had my modified Freelander with AF and changed to Admiral at £100 cheaper, and our lass was with AF and she got a quote £75 cheaper with Admiral. On enquiring about their Multicar policy they knocked another £100 off mine, and another £75 off the the wifes Freelander.
This "we'll match any quote" nonsense is just keeping these chancers in business.

I'd like to say it comes down to the modifications. Full interior rollcage, FIA bucket seats and harnesses, Momo steering wheel so no airbags, suspension lift, full size intercooler, wheel spacers etc etc..............So when an insurance company who claims to be "modified vehicle specialists" can't insure me, then something is wrong with their advertising .
Should be "Modified vehicle specialists, unless we've not insured one like it before, in which case we will ring round and find someone who've also never insured one like it before but who are willing to take a punt on you for an extortionate fee".
AF quoted around £443. I suppose it's not too bad. The reason I was miffed is that it has been steadily going up while my other Freelander I had insured with them was getting cheaper even though this was "extremely modified" with a more comprehensive space frame type roll cage that was welded in and also went through the bulkhead and formed the turret tops for the suspension both front and rear, it also had fox coilover suspension, engine was mounted centrally, front wishbones were bespoke items as the suspension was also mounted in a different position, engine had uprated injectors and a turbo from a 3ltr engine, plus other stuff like massive intercooler etc . See my Avatar of it being suspended by it's rollcage. The last time they insured it, it was around £350 and had a much higher insured value too.
Now where's that guy from Adrian Flux who used to frequent these pages.................he seemed to be good at getting a discount for forum users.

Try directly contacting the company that AF were insuring you with before, as they may no longer use them.
