After trawling the net for weeks to sort my insurance for my Disco, i finally went with Adrian Flux.

Anyway whilst confirming the details the girl on the phone told me if i insured it for 5k it would require a cat 1 immobiliser fitted, but if i drop the insurance value to 4995, e.g a fiver, that would put me below the threshold for needing a cat 1, and a factory fitted one is sufficient.

Interesting bit of advice, i shall store that for future reference, immobiliser thresholds.

I was not informed of the imobilers thing when I go insurance only when I recieved the paperwork did they send a letter saying they wanted proof of imobiliser, and the saga went on....

I have the same problem at the moment. My wife has insured ours as a second car, fully comp with direct line for £257,(August 1994, 300 tdi) which I thought was ok. Trouble is now they have sent paperwork they want proof of the alarm system. They won't accept factory fitted as they say Thatcham category 1 didn't come in until November 1994 on the discoveries. Anyone know how to get around this prob. I have the original alarm, no button now though, but i have an immobiliser fitted aswell. Can alarm specialists confirm if they are category 1 and send proof to insurance. thanks in advance. Alistair

why yours is wanting cat 1 is a bit puzzling?

and id have thought your car would be valued less than 5k?

I am direct line as well same issue, I was told that either a cat 1 or 2. the difference is that a cat 2 is just the imobiliser and the cat 1 is an alarm as well. They did not expland very well about the alarms all they sent me were letters saying that the paperwork was not adequote. I spoke to my locale LR dealer and they did me two letters to explane what the alarm was. It was only when I phoned up they explaned that I needed a new one fitted.

As for you'r imobilser yo need to find out who makes it and what you have and send them proof of this, if they are haveing a happy day they may say that it is ok or they will just send you the same crappy letterr they sent me.

They recomend Toad alarms and the cost is aprox:

Cat2 £110
Cat1 £340

Over here in Oz as of 1996 you cant even register a car without an imobiliser fitted. All vehicles that change hands have to have an imobiliser fitted if they didnt come with one as standard. That means if you have owned the same little rust bucket for the last 30 years and dont sell it, it's legal.

I imagine things like that are picked up in what you call an MOT (we call it a RWC-Road Worthy Certificate). Not every state has yearly RWC but those that do hate those of us that dont.

If you dont have an alarm the Insurance companies dont mind, they just charge you more..bastards .

My insurance costs more than the city folk, despite me telling them that only a couple of hundred people are out here. They reckon its the long distances (liable to fall asleep driving) and the likelyhood of kangaroo damage despite the solid steel bullbar that I could winch the vehicle up a vertical wall with confidence. (I have a pic somewhere of them doing that with this make of bullbar..hmmm might have to look for it)

I was asked about an immobiliser when I bought another RR cl for my wife a few months back,I said yes it has got a Clifford one fitted and when I find time I will rip it out.The polite lady asked me why - I said its quite simple on a 300tdi classic you only need 2 bits of wire to get past any immobiliser.One to the pump,one to the starter solenoid - job done !
When I told her I run a landrover garage and have removed loads of them she agreed and that was that.Lancaster insurance are the company.
Outback Jack,I wonder how long you will continue with no RWC - couldnt believe it last year when I was out there scratching about that so many old bombs are still running around untested.I was answered by the question " who the bloody hell would do it - and to what standard? Think my brother has a point with the shortages of skilled labour in WA,wish I was still there..........
