Afternoon!

I was hoping to dip in to the pool of knowledge here, regarding insuring a Landie!

being young doesnt help, i appreciate that. but i've had quote from 350 up to more than the value of the series IIa i've got my eye on!

It is modified, 3.0 V6 put in, roll cage, brakes, snorkel and thats about it.

Who would you recommend to go to for insuring a modified old landie? and is there anyway of getting your quote down?

Mundane thread i know, but of great help nonetheless!

regards,

Tom

a standard landy would help a bit.
insurance companys dont like modified cars in any shape or fashion.

also grow older. they dont like young uns either.

When you find another landrover, try NFU Mutual, were insured with them and they seem very good.

Scott.

NFU - cudnt help cos of age :(

Adrian Flux came through, called up an hour later to buy landie - it had gone!

They had originally said roll cage and pick up would almost dbl cost - but they did it for original quote price (inc mods)! wish i'd got landie quicker! :(

The first thing is, look out for non turbos. Tell them its garaged at night, social and domestic driving only, not for work, and give them a low annual milage; say 4000miles, they have no way of telling because they don't check your milage before your policy starts or anything, don't mention ANY mods to them (Obviously they don't know LR's), things like side steps are mods, but as you can buy them fitted then no one will know, if they are huge noticible mods like a DIY roll cage then you could be in trouble.

The fact my 90 was a Petrol but had a Diesel put in would have had them going nuts, so just tell them its a Diesel, make sure the registration documentation notes this change aswell (before phoning the insurance - then they will put in your registration and get all its details), then as far as the insurance know it always has been and won't be counted as a mod.

I can't think of anything else to save you money or get it cheaper, if you can insure it out of a different premises, i.e. if you have family that live on a farm, insure it through the farm address, they will take the post code, note its not in a town, and therefore not charge inner city prices. My neighbour insures his car via his address in Lewis, his insurance is cheap, nothing wrong in that, he owns both houses.

Thing I find the most entertaining, is on the whole you can get cheaper insurance on a LR than you can a typical buzzbox, but in the end, how much damage is 2tonnes of steel going to cause over 750kg of plastic?!?

Did all of that discomania for when i called up, live in middle of norfolk countryside. the quote i got for 3.0l v6 series 2a with roll cage, RR diffs, dif brakes, new seats was just under £400 fully comp. which for a 21 year old, is actually quite good - i thought so anyway!

thanks again for your help guys, i shall just now have to wait until another comes along!

discomania- whilst I'm on your side with the "cheating fairly" approach to insurance, the truth is you are not likely to be legally insured IF you don't disclose any mods etc. The insurance policy you took out is on the basis of truths and facts - when you end up having to claim your policy could be worthless....

Hi Trouble

I live in Norfolk and found a company in Norwich that insures my landie. It's called: 'It's4Me'. It costs me £18 per month for my 110 V8, fully comp. I have no modifications or off-roading aspirations, but you might want to give them a ring??

Hope this helps

Lis

Yeh funnily enough, office is just round from them on riverside!

they've given me cheap quotes for cars before.

I've to wait really until another landie comes along!

Hi Trouble,

I was getting crap quotes from a few different companies until i found Footman James who blew everyone else out the water. I'm driving a series 3 diesel and i think the premium is around £270 which also includes breakdown (ok it's probably get you to the nearest garage but better than nowt).

Bob. (25)

P.s Should also mention that it is unlimited mileage.

I am 16 and hopeing 2 insure my series 1 80 next year it has a 2.25 diesel.
Who would be the best to insure with?

Ps, tried to insure the 109 2.6 i have been givon (project) £2600! Think i will mot it and flog it!!!

Hi Trouble.

I had a similar problem trying to get mine insured - ex-military, converted to a V8, RR axles and brakes and a 2" lift kit. I had quotes ranging from £600 to £1100 and was getting a bit worried. Lancaster Insurance gave me a quote for £450 but was very limited, Land Rover Direct quoted me the same price, but their policy is for commercial use which it isn't for.

A couple of chaps from the Yorkshire Off-road club suggested SureTerm Direct. Fully comp insurance, 5000 miles limited, can use to commute to work and back, free recovery for £238 - done! Does not accrue no claims, and does not affect existing no claims bonuses.
