Hello guys, first of all i have done a google search and a search on here but i cant seem to find an answer.

I am thinking of going for a defender in the near future and as you do i have been looking at a few online and doing some insurance quotes.

Anyhow, for some defender 90's i get a quote of about £620, others a few grand!

From what i can work out on the insurance policy websites, the expensive quotes seem to be ones that are classed as vans/commercial vehicles. The defenders classed as cars seem to be really reasonable and indeed cheaper to insure than my current little run about.

Has anyone a definitve guide as toward what i am looking for to spot a 'car' defender? I am sick of seeing ones i like and then doing an insurance quote to find its a silly price to insure as its classed as a van/commercial vehicle.

I am new on here so apologies if i have missed something, hopefully some one can help/point me in the right direction.

Thanks guys.

Liam

You'll be looking for a county spec rather than a panel van

Can also do better by calling insurers than using quote engines - Lancaster and others that know Landys can be better than your high street names

:welcome: by the way

I'm 17 and for third party fire & theft (with both parents as named drivers) on my 1986 90 van side 2.5 n/a is £ 3100  classed as normal car insurance not van insurance. Van and fully comp makes mine about £6000!

Id get the parents to insure that on a classic policy with you as a named driver, ok, you wont accrue any no claims but in 4 years you could save 12 grand...then you'd be 21 and get much cheaper insurance and a great landy with the 12k saved.

Lancaster are worth a try. My wife has just done her 90 with them and it was about £150.

i tried to get insured on a landy when i was 18 and got laughed at on every fone call -no points or anything- so you gotta be doing something right!

Dr evil's right, its a wonder how they work that out though as it can vary massivly for a few hundred meters of a street.

weird too that they wouldnt insure me even though i lived in the middle of the new forest + had been driving my dads series since i could reach the pedals + see over the dash but now i live in a shabby area in the middle of guz + its less than £500 for a 2.5 turbo diesel?!
Age is the deciding factor i think!

Is there a difference between pickups and vans in terms of insurance, or as their both commercial doesn't it matter? I've been considering whacking a hard top on my pickup but if it'll hammer the insurance I won't bother.

I changed my 90van top for a truck cab and the insurance didn't change or charge for the alteration saying it's all commercial.

Try admiral, and if you want proper answers call them. When I had my old Punto GT (I was 18 don't hate it was cool then!) no one would insure me for less than £3500 F&T! Admiral did it for just over £700. Same as when I got the 90, all quotes over £1000, I did an online quote on a compare site admiral was cheapest, about £600 with me and boyfriend.

I'm with Adrian Flux, they asked me why I bought the 'van' version, I told them it was because it was a good price, which it was. I had to confirm in writing that it wasn't for commercial use.
