Evening all,

So the speedo on my 2006 td6 HSE has decided to give up the ghost and stop working...... needle will not move. Everything else works perfectly except for some pixilation on the lcd screen. Landrover Ireland has quoted me €1388.17 to supply a new instrument cluster and code it to my VIN so milage is correct.
ive seen some 2nd hand units online for about €100 - €200 so im considering one of these.
ive been told that if i buy a 2nd hand unit with less milage than my current cluster & from the same year as my vehicle i can simply plug it in and the milage on the 2nd hand unit will increase to my current reading but show a tamper dot as the VIN numbers will not match but the cluster will function perfectly.

has anyone got any advice?

Thanks

Mark

Are you sure it's the speedo and not a fault elsewhere? If it really is the instrument head, it's quite likely to be a failed solder joint or a connection problem. I have fixed duff speedo's on a number of cars but not your model, the last one I did was on my Transit which was a fractured solder joint.

Have you had a look at the bmw inpa software i think it works on your year its free you just need the right cable, it will do diagnostic and programming and a must have to save on dealer trips

Yep diagnosed by landrover themselves.

No i had no idea this was even an option on my 2006.
You hardly have a link to the software?

With my nasty suspicious mind, I wonder. Stealers love to change the most expensive bit possible for any given fault. DIY diagnostics would prove (or disprove) the instrument cluster as usually instruments can be driven by diagnostics for test purposes

It does the bmw made cars up to a certain year @stustrong knows more than me, There are companys that will sell you the lead and software with tech backup for about £70, with it you can diag and code replacement components

They had the RR for almost a week and charged me €530 for the pleasure.
The service manager said they were 100% sure the cluster had to be changed. I enquired about them coding a 2nd had cluster but he shot it down straight away by saying it was agains their service procedures.

If its definitely cluster issue then a 2nd hand cluster plug it in and go, you'll get a mileage tamper dot (quick Google)

Being a td6 the pre 05 car had 3 lcd screens,
Facelift 2005 2006 td6s had a 2 lcd cluster,

Find one with marginally less miles then yours, you can sync the lcm and ews immobiliser up or down the miles,

But the clusters depending on the internal memory can only be made higher,

Bmw standard tools can be installed on a laptop and is pretty much a 1 click install now some functions arnt in full English usually German and some measurments are in farenheight instead of Celsius but not really a problem
also needed is bmw inpa lead to work,

another handy one to have aswell is bmw scanner 1.4.0
Both will with a facelift bmw engined one the td6,

You can get into everything abs, air suspension the lot

Cluster has to be correct face to what youve got in, and also has to be from a td6 as they hold the initial diag protocol

Hope this helps

Speedo is driven from rear left abs sensor
Then fed too the abs pump
The abs pump sends a hall signal too the speedo then the body control module,

super information!!! this is why i love this Forum!!

the cluster ive ordered is from a 2006 vogue. ive the HSE. the only difference in the cluster that i can see is my speedo is measured in KPH and the 2nd hand one is measured in KPH AND MPH.
the tamper dot doesnt bother me as ill be driving this old girl until she quits on me so ill just directly swap the clusters as the new one is showing less milage.

Yeah the mph and kph will still be in the same locations,
You could swap the kph face over but that would mean removing the cluster needles and may ruin the stepper motors,

Hi just a quick query to ask how you got on with this ?

I have a faulty fuel gauge (even on self-test the needle only goes to just over 1/2). I also have a whole spare cluster, although pulled from a Diesel (I’m petrol V8).

Are these hot-swappable ?
And what coding would be needed ? -I have Gap iid and INPA ( in English with cable).

Thanks

Bob
