As per the above, I'm about to install the windows this weekend. There are plenty of previous threads on this, although none with any lurverly pictures. I'm going to make a cardboard template, mask the area, cut the 'ole then use silicone and rivets to install the window.
Have I missed anything? What size rivets are required (looks like 5mm)

My rivets were smaller than 5mm. 3mm or 4mm can't remember  it's an age thing :( Can't you measure the holes in the frame?
I used a self adhesive foam seal on mine, instead of silicone. Mine had foam seals in originally and the pop rivets clamp the seal.

Can't measure the holes just yet - the windows were delivered to the office. The foam strip is a good idea, thanks. Of course the windows don't come with any instructions or sealant, but I have a roll of self adhesive foam in the shed.

Wheeler Dealers on the box did an episode doing up a V8 defender hardtop. They showed how to fit side windows. The repeat comes on frequently, or you could track it down if you have sky.

Cheers Wimblowdriver - I do remember seeing that. I don't have sky, but it's probably on the WWW somewhere.

Season 7 episode 8, 21 minutes in.
It's a discovery program so they get their lawyers to make YouTube pull it regularly.

Yes watch this:) the only thing I remember is he cut the corners first using a jigsaw or something then used a grinder for the sides of the openings. He made it look very easy as usual ;)

I dare say if I had his workshop it would make life a lot easier lol. I will be working on the driveway, so pray for sunshine. Using a thin disc for the straight cuts is a good tip though.

From memory (and I have not done this job myself); there are vertical stiffeners to be removed from inside the panel. Then find the exact centre of the panel on the inside and drill a small pilot hole so the position can be seen from the outside, this will be the datum for marking out. Stick masking tape on the outside of the panel where the cut lines will be and mark the cut lines on the tape. Wimblowdrivers top tip:- once you have marked out the rectangle, check the diagonals which should be exactly the same measurement, if not the rectangle is "not square" and the window will not fit. Mark the radius in each corner. Cut a large hole within the area to be cut out (say 1 inch diameter - no millimetres in my world) as the starter for the jig saw and get cutting, jig saw corners and thin blade grinder on the straights. You will need a tool to remove any burrs. Get a mate to help with handling the glass panel, suction lifters will help but a bit pricey for one use. Offer the panel up, mark rivet holes and drill / fit rivets to fix the new panel. Always measure twice and cut once.

Only problem with the Wheeler Dealers thing is the windows in a defender are not Centralized !!

Sizes taken off a 2015 puma measured by myself at main Dealer earlier this year and transferred to my hardtop.
These sizes are to the outside edge of your window frame

18cm from door opening
15cm from back corner
3,5cm from under roof gutter

Yes, dims you have are similar to my puma. The window is central on the horizontal axis and offset front to rear, so it fits in with the internal plastic trims which surround it. A panel van would not be so restricted in positioning the side window, but no doubt Zeaphod will adjust the position to suit his van. Also I doubt the aftermarket item has the same dimensions as a factory item.

True I used Factory Windows as the price was not much more than aftermarket, and i think they look better.
Depends if he wants a Factory look or a Farmyard look ;)

Factory look obviously. If he wanted Farm Yard look, he would have bought an Ifor canopy and wellies with shyte on.

When cutting a small window in my van side I used a jigsaw with a metal blade. Use eye protection as it spits hot metal straight at you lol

So what was the point of your first post ? The dimensions I gave will give him an idea of a Factory look. But you decided he did not want that look or that the aftermarket one's are smaller, I know the corner radius is different but I think they are very similar size.

It's handy to have an extra pair of hands for the last bit of cut, and protect your paintwork

Thank you for this, perfect timing, saves me having to measure up someone elses. If cost wasn't an issue I certainly would have went for genuine, but it was adding another £200 onto the price. The Britpart "deluxe" windows look well enough made to me. Time will tell, although my last 90 had a station wagon rear, and the windows were pretty crap - rattled and leaked. Hard to imagine them being worse.
