i take it you dont get inlet manifold gaskets for top and underside housing??
mines a 96 petrol but i managed to download this rave cd thing to get torques but says to use kymlar or something in there?? there was no gaskets when i removed it and i was thinking a bit slap dash when i see paste had been used!!!
is this the case then?? if so whats best to use??

you get a valley gasket that goes over the heads and centre of block, that is the inlet gasket!!! the plenum to trumpet housing has no gasket i believe but the trumpet to inlet does i think!!!

yeah the valley gaskets the big huge black one i have ordered the full head gasket kit with new head bolts but when i started removing it all there was no gasket between the big centre bit and the trumpets just paste of some kind and also paste only between the trumpets and actual inlet top cover that has land rover 4.0 stamped on the top??
so im unsure if there should have been any or not as nothing to compare with?

just put some gasket seal on or search one of the many online 4x4 shops, it prolly wont hurt to have a bit of gasket paper on there instead of sealer but so long as it seals the function will be the same!!!

The word is Hylomar it was developed for and used by Rolls Royce for metal to metal joints on jet engines. It is the best gasket compound you can buy. To use it, apply to both surfaces to be joined with a brush. Place together and fit bolts loosely. Wait for 15 mins or so for solvent to evaporate, then tighten up. Simples. Beware of immitations they are not as good.

Just to add to this a little. If you are joining two surfaces that may have slight deformaties say 0.030" to 0.040" and do not wish to use a gasket. Apply Hylomar heavily to both surfaces to be joined and wait half an hour BEFORE placing together. Then assemble and lightly nip bolts but do not fully tighten for a further 15 mins. Whipe off excess with rag and solvent. This method is not suitable for high pressure applications. This method is good for pressed steel sumps and rocker covers (use with gaskets) were the sump maybe deformed. You of course could use Silicone if you want to have to use a crowbar to disassemble next time.

if you use silicone, the easiest way to remove the parts is to use pressure over a short period of i time, i.e rig up a bit of timber and car jack, put pressure on the timber with car jack( obviously timber so it doesnt put too much pressure on and flexes to allow pressure to build without cracking anything) leave it for an hour and you will find its released everything without damage. of course there isnt enough mating surface on the parts your looking at to stick too hard unless your a namby pamby 4ft dwaff!!!

I seem to remember (Mmmm 30 old years ago) Hylomar came in red and blue versions, is that still the case?
