Hi all, I posted a few moths back about a whining noise. well after replacing the turbo, hoses, sensors, de carbonising the egr, and then taking her to a garage to be told it was the turbo, which i replied new turbo was fitted a few weeks back. even the garage was stumped. Well last week i took her for the mot and mentioned this noise, they said it could be that the egr is sticking. so while replacing the stuff she had failed on i ordered a new egr. She's been running great, no noise no loss of power no eml or going into limp mode. I thought the problem had been sorted. Guess again driving home the other night, I got the noise again and then a bang. couldnt really stop as it was a dark country lane, i was only 10mins from home so let her roll. ONce home popped the bonnet, thinking it was just a hose that might have popped off, but it wasnt, black gunk all over the pipes and fan, looked at the inlet manifold and its split on the seam at the front.

So I have a new one coming. Does it need to be torqued down? when i get the old one off is there anything i need to look for? Is it possible that this was the cause of the noise, eml, loss of power and her going into limp mode?

Inlet manifolds have been known to fail. A hairline crack appears which is virtually impossible to see, then they go pop.
There is a torque setting for them which I don't have to hand, but hand right is plenty, don't overdo it or you'll crack it.

Wow, that sounds fairly catastrophic(well, for the intlet manifold anyway!)

I would guess that if there was that much pressure in the inlet manifold to cause that then yes, its very possible that was what was causing the issue...BUT is there anything else that could have caused such a failure? I see Mike has posted as I write this. If it's a 'known issue' then replacement will hopefully resolve it. I would include EGR servicing and cleaning in any servicing regimen you can do in the future, think about the BMW oil seperator upgrade for the PCV system to hopefully reduce oil being fed back into the inlet but I have my doubts about the real effectiveness of this apparatus (in my limited experience admittedly) In theory this should reduce the amount of crud entering the inlet, should help to elongate the life and functionality of the EGR and hopefully you shouldn't have to worry about the inlet manifold for many miles to come...Let us know how things turn out..

Makes me wonder about my inlet manifold...:eek:
 
I have read that they have a design fault. Thank you and hopefully once the new one is on, no more problems for a while. She's worse than a woman with PMT lol
 
MollyNomad the EGR is brand new and was only fitted a few weeks ago, the PCV filter has been changed to the new cyclone one when I did a service on her back in june/july. As for miles, while I've had her 2years this nov, and only put 5k on her and most of that was last year when I moved house (80 miles round trip), most shes used for now is work which is about 10miles a day and the occasional off road trip thats my short cut home sometimes lol
 
Of the three Freelanders currently standing on my drive I have had all the inlet manifolds off/on again multiple times and have had no problems with any of them. I've never torqued them when refitting, just used my judgement as to what constitutes "tight enough". As for the whining noise, that would probably have been an air leak through the crack.
 
the noise only happened under 2 conditions, after the kickdown revs about 2500 and at going 45mph if i eased off the throttle the noise stopped if left then eml and loss of power or limp mode. and the second in 4th gear and the same revs and mph. the faster i went the more likely i am to get the noise which i can only describe as a whistling rocket. Lol the way shes going at the moment theres only the engine, gearbox and diff thats not been changed.

Oohhhh short journeys are the death of modern diesels poor things....SET THEM FREE,...get on the motorway more often and give it some 'welly'... :D

Sometimes the best love is 'Tough Love'..When 'she' is sorted give her an 'Italian Tune Up' at every opportunity.....
 
There have been mods done to the inlet to delete the plastic part. @hd3 has a thread somewhere with pictures, very nice.
It does seem to be luck of the draw with the manifold as to wether they pop or not.

haha, Skinny Mike like i did in my vectra many moons ago, got 130mph at 4am on the M18, hmmm might have to go on an early morning run down the M62
 
It's all about getting the engine hot, then it will eat its own gunk.
Pour a bottle of injector cleaner into a tank of super diesel and drive, enjoy yourself. A good couple of hours of motorway and A roads. Come down the A1 then M18 up the M1 get onto the Stocksbridge bypass (A616) turn off at the Flouch roundabout and back on the A roads to Huddersfield. Lovely drive/scenery. Your car will love you.

HAHAHAHAHA and yea, drive back to Barnsley ( barnsley lass here only been in udders field a year) head to Marr and jump on the A1(M) at j37 down to M18 and then north bound on the M1 at j32 i think, off at j35a, Cant believe the Balta house has gone now, not been there since 2012/13 best curry house ever. then i can either head towards work at crow edge and go through new mill or turn off and head for holmfirth and home. And Super diesel? The more expensive type?
 
Yes, the expensive stuff. I use Texaco super, other like Shell V power.
The Balti place is going to be houses:(

Really, wow. Like i said a best curry house i have ever been to. But its the way things are going, I look at mapplewell barnsley and all the green space that i use to run around on when i was a nipper has gone, and what i use to call the 'pottycroft' at side of the old pit that was marsh land is now houses, its a shame. At least here theres loads of green space for my kids and we love to have a walk in the 'mountains' at Meltham as my young un calls them
Think to closet texaco is at honley, so a nice detour there.
