so my dear old range rover 2.5dt 1997 has gone in to have it's injector pump removed and reconditioned due to a bad diesel leak around the centre join. i got a call to say that although they will recon it they it couldn't be recalibarated due to the wear on the pump... true??? i thought recon a pump and all seals would be done and it would be nearly as good as new.
has anyone had any experience of reconditioning these pumps and are they any good after doing so???
 
I bought one recon from a bosh centre (in portugal) and my DSE is running like new!!
(around 1000euros)
No more issues starting hot, or cold.

If they are doing a proper re-conditioning job it should be as good as new unless it's too far gone to be worth doing. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing.
 
it's being reconed by a diesel specialist in exeter that deal with bosch pumps. so i'm hoping they know what they are doing:confused: just don't see why they can't calibarate it if the seals and everthing have been changed

How much did this recon cost you? If the pump has been reconned it should have had all worn parts replaced. And be like new. Maybe should have cost £500.00 + depending on what was found worn. These pumps are expensive to repair because of parts cost. If they have just replaced seals for a couple of hundred quid that is not a recon.

Keith on another thread she says it was £390.00 for removal recon and refit. So i think you maybe correct, con not recon.

Maybe just fixed the leak Tony? From what little I know about FIP's a recon is as good as new unless the gubbins is too badly worn in which case it's the bin:):)

I think that must be the case Keith. You cannot recon a pump then say it can't be callibrated because of worn parts. It's a bit like saying "Yes sir we have reconditioned your engine, but don't expect too much compression the piston rings are knackered". I think maybe Ladyrangers use of the word recon was a tad misleading. Think it's just had the seals done. Full recon on pump would have been minimum £450.00 to £650.00 alone never mind the take out and refit time.

i'm worried it is a con!! thats why i'm asking. how much for just replacing seals?? and how much can you replace in these pumps and to what cost. i sent the rangey in and his said he wouldtake it off and send it to them for reconditioning. then rang to say that it was knackered and the best they could do is seal it up so it didn't leak but it would be the same price?? sounds dodgey?
how much should i be paying for a seal replacement on it including the labour to do it?
 
Well to buy the full seal kit for this pump is a massive £13, labour for the actual change of the seal you are talking about (just one seal) is about half an hour, maybe an hour if you are being generous time wise. The price you are being charged, is this for the whole job or is the garages bill to remove the pump, and then then to refit it once it comes back, assuming they are not doing the refurb themselves? If they are doing the refurb themselves and are charging you the same price eitherway they are either a, Very cheap to remove, fully refurb and refit a FIP or b, questionable on what the quality of work they are doing. I would like to say, to cover my own backside, that I do not know this garage and am not casting aspertions on them or their workmanship and that the above represent only the questions I would ask myself.
 
From memory, Fastline in Northampton offered me £130 odd for service & calibration, which I guess is just replacing seals & calibrating etc. didn't include removal and refitting of FIP.
perhaps £390 including removal and refit & timing would be about right for a service.

Break down is £200 for refurb, now i'm thinking it is the seals changing as it has gone in coz it's leaking diesel. but they said that they could not recalibarate it due to the condition of the pump.

So that said does £200 sound ok for replacing all the seals in the pump?

£190 sounds ok to me for the removale and refitting.

It depends what their charging rate is. Maybe they have a fixed rate. But £200.00 for an hour or hour and a halfs work is nice if you can get it.

Yes i will live with that. That is £76.00 an hour. That is about right if that is his charging rate. But the £200.00 to change seals is taking the **** somewhat i would say, for maybe at most one and a half hours work and max say £20.00 for seals. That would mean their charging rate was £120.00 per hour. Unless as i said before they have a fixed rate to strip and change pump seals. Does the vehicle run ok that is the question?
 
If they've sent the FIP away to a specialist for seals and calibration, and there are worn parts preventing calibration, then you'd expect the specialist to either quote for replacement of worn parts OR not charge the calibration fee.
Perhaps they mean they've calibrated, but they've not achieved the exact settings to spec, because of the wear.
if so, then it should go at least as well as it did before it came off the car. And not leak.

so perhaps all in all, this represents market rate for this work, short of more substantial recon of the FIP.

I'd say that £76 pound per hour labour charge is very high unless it is a dealership. £40 per hour rate would be a more reasonable rate in my opinion if it is a normal garage, going on what my mate's garage charges per hour.
I would however say that it's a good price if it runs well and doesn't leak as the price of a second hand fip is around the £400 mark by itself so to have yours removed, sorted and refitted with some form of warranty for £390 is pretty decent, even if that doesn't include VAT.
