Hi all,
I want to take a 12v feed which is only live when the ignition is on, to a blue sea fuse box. To do this right, I want to identify a point at the fuse box to spur from

As I am at work and don't have access to the 110 defender, can someone shed some light on how to best achieve this and any photos would be great .

I did think about spring sprung from a live in the dash with scotchlock but with the plan of requiring additional feeds later, I would rather do it right once rather than fixing it later .

Thanks
Nick .

A quick look at what's needs to be done

I need to take a live from the battery.
Wire it to a relay ( what relay??)
Wire a trigger live to the relay
Wire the relay to my blue sea fuse box .
Then to the device .

So .can anyone recommend a relay to use and if I have it correct above?

The above looks correct. You have a simple circuit to switch the relay which is taken from a spur off the ignition circuit. You could do this with a scotch lock but I would recommend doing it properly if you can.
Then the heavier duty circuit is a fused power feed from the battery to the relay and from the relay to you fuse board.
The what relay and the size of the relay you will need will depend on what you are planning on running from the fuse box, as will the fuse size needed to for battery power feed. I have little 30 amp rated relays for my spot lights up to a 500amp solenoid to isolate my winch.

There are a few things that need a switched live on my machine, namely the rev counter, the dashcam, the tracker and a few others. I've used the relevant spade terminal on the back of the ignition switch. The one that comes on as the first turn of the key, to position 1. You can get 'piggyback' spade terminals with a female spade, a spare male spade and a receptacle to crimp the wire into, so more than one wire can be attached to the terminal but you can still pull them apart if you need to. These wires have inline fuses in them just in case they chafe through anywhere, and then go off to activate relays to switch the various accessories on.

When my rev counter came the supplier had helpfully included in the box a bunch of self piercing clip on connectors to help wire it in. I was mortified. they weren't even genuine Scotch Locks but were a cheap imitation. I threw them away as quickly as I could. If they're left lying around the house there is a danger that someone may attempt to use them.
