You should get a tidy TD5 for that sort of money, something with less than 120k on the clock. service history, new mot (check if any advisories). Spend time getting a good one and provided you keep on top of the maintenence you'll be ok. Take someone with you that knows about D2's, also put your location on your profile, without that you won't get a lot of help.
And more importantly, go to the intro section and introduce yourself! You'll take a lot of **** for not doing so, put on your best rhino hide coat, wait for the ****, then you can come up for air..... and it'll start again. BUT, it's all worth it in the end, welcome
Take a change of clothes with you when you view and get under it!! Chassis rust or leaks an obvious start, take a camera and photograph any defects you not sure of so you can post pics and ask advice. Check MOT advisory history to see if issues been resolved. Give it a proper test drive, make sure fully warmed up and keep nostrils open for burning clutch or such like. Test everything!! Windows, air con, doors lock and unlock, transfer box change to low ratio......if you get a hint of any problems, dont buy until you are sure you know the extent of it. Some minor problems are no worries but can be used to talk price down of course. Good luck

Many are coming up to needing a clutch & flywheel, worth asking if it's been done, not a cheap job
Rust rust rot ... Make sure it's not been caked in wax oyl to look pretty and is just rusting under it
Wheel hubs are another I would check, most needing them done about now again not cheap for a decent quality
Locks are £70 ish a go, make sure they all work
Check the parts on it, filters, tyres, are they cheapest of the cheap or decent make often helps you tell if it's looked after or penny pinched.

If you are not bothered about the bells and whistles, go for a base model one, especially without sunroofs, ABS, airbag suspension etc. It will be much less to go wrong, and may be cheaper in the long run.
Mine was not unreliable but What finally did it for me was the wet head from the leaky sunroofs and the £1k plus ABS problems.
