To old for this

I have a 1999 Freelander 2.0lt di, an electrical problem started not long after I got the thing, after rain or really cold at first, and only when I indicated the car would short out all electrics fail, and everything shuts down. After being in the garage (local garage that isn't going to charge me for the work as they have not fixed the fault) and having checked all the electrics, it still doing it any ideas, its now not safe to indicate, even though the emergency flashers are fine no short out at all.

Sounds like the problem lies in the stalk. If it lay in one of the lights it would do it when the hazards were on.

The car has total engine shut down, turns off, loss of all power, all the lights come on, on the dash like they would when you turning car on. No fuses blow, garage have had fuse box out and checked all earth points.

Clue here is that indicators are ignition fed, Whereas hazard flashers are permanent live feed. Use of the indicators seems to be overloading the ignition supply circuit ie drawing too much current. These problems are always difficult to trace but usually end up being something simple to fix like bad earth connection, loose relay, loose fuse in holder. If you're lucky you'll find something getting unusually hot within the circuit. Good luck.

We have already done that garage say it could be management chip, the thing is when towing it dosn't do, so going to sell it and get new car, it wont be a Freelander.

hmmmn, bit of a defeatist attitude. I would be looking at the connections on the back of the ignition barrel, or maybe the ignition barrel itself.

one little fault and you sell the car ? thank your lucky stars you were only at the first turning of what could be a very very long road.

This is not the first fault, diff changed, clutch changed ,sorted out leak in cubby box, boot drop window, door locks wont unlock sorted, maybe small things to you but I am on my own and I tried and after two year, I am giving up a defeatist attitude I can live with that.

not small things at all, three things out of your list I've done as well. some of them are just awkward jobs for the hell of it. nice vehicles when they're ok, but when they start to go wrong, become the bane of your life.

I apologise for any upset I may have caused with my comments.

Good Luck, hope you get a good price for it.

I had something like this after splashing about on the Plain... my Tuning Box had gotten damp..... check your ECU box is water tight ;)
