Normally my disco 1 300tdi would return about 400 miles to a full tank before the warning light would come on. recently I have cut the valance off and all of a sudden the disco is now at 420 miles and still going strong off one tank

Does anyone think that the fuel light has broke??

And would the valance make that much of a difference?

its a brick on wheels with the air resistance to match, what do you think removing some resistance will do ? 20 extra miles does seem excessive though....might be fuel or sometging too, I get 450 from a tank at texaco or 420 from asda so go figure

I didn't envisage it doing anything as it's a brick on wheels..... now at 430 miles ...... I might wimp out and fill it

Fuel from the branded garages is better quality, and you will get more mpg from it. I always use shell fuel from the same garage, and can squeeze 450 miles from a tank doing the weekly commute. When you take into account the big tyres, tweaked pump, full size intercooler and other bolted on bits of extra weight is pretty good. Altering the aerodynamics by removing the valance could possibly increase the range, as air is now going under the truck, rather than being forced around. Essentially you have decreased the frontal surface area, reducing drag.

Changed nothing except the battery and taking the valance off...... panic over though the light came on at 441 miles

Same garage as well ..... strange

That will depend on what u pay for your fuel will it not.
The lamp will illuminate when only 9 litre of fuel is left in the tank.

I think mine must be a bit dodgy then, cos it runs out of fuel about 5 miles after the light comes on!
I'm used to cars where the light comes on and I can carry on driving for another 40-50 miles! Ahh well, once y'know the quirks of your own car you can accomodate them. :)

Most times I leave it and fill up when the light illuminates, only last week I did 30 miles that way and then filled up and brimmed with 86 litres so in theory there was only 3 litres remaining in the discos 89 litre tank before I filled it up.

With my rough workings it appears that the last 30 miles were done on 6 litres of petrol, so 22.5mpg.
