Happy that I just bought my first LR 110 county, P reg. Bought it from a chap I recovered - blown gasket. As a way of gaining some LR knowledge, I'm considering doing the skim myself, glass and paper technique, (heard that hand rubbing is a pleasure ;)). Q...Should it be attempted? Anyone been up this Strasse? Thanks for advice &or direction

All I can think about that is that you must be very short on other entertainment.

Try posting about it in the Defender section, or General Land Rover section.

Personally you would better spend you time fixing something else to learn a landy:).

As above ask in the right section, I would think you would be bored of it within the hour, anyway you need the head off and check it first, it maybe fine which then means you can waste use your time on something else that's broken:D.

Presuming it's an original 300/200Tdi, I wouldn't attempt the sandpaper on glass method* - the hardened surface / "outer layer" of the head needs skimming properly to get it right IME.... YMMV, but first step is to strip and assess, including a pressure test .....;)

* - it's a relatively large area to keep lubricated and clear of swarf to stop the head rocking. Niether skimming or a new head are crazy money, so really not worth doing it "wrong", as it were....
 
Smoking badly from the exhaust and smoke venting out of the oil filler opening, plus chugging noise. No oil in the downpipe,,, would you say gasket failure?

Ta for this, on the new head thought, is it worth going for (if I understand rightly) a head with the altered water way?
 
quite likely - almost a known weakness ....



300 = yes, if needed - 200 = no - replace with used 300 IMHO ( unlikely to be 200, but ..... )

Are you keeping this vehicle ? etc ..... we need pictures.... and, as post #11 - put a fred in the right place..

Probably going to keep and fettle her, I have looked at out 20 and this one seemed the best, solid chassis with no patches 2 doors need help and a patch for the foot-well on one side. I have the somewhat £1200 p.a. bills spent on her for the last 15 years. Any ideas on her value, much appreciated

Tidy looking Landy, better still once the engine issue is resolved!

As for prices, they’re all over the place. Try eBay, LRO ads and FB marketplace for an idea.
