Two way radio's are fine to use....mobile phones on hands free are fine to use ...until you crash! There was a case where an HGV driver was on hands free and killed someone.

Driver using hands-free phone caused fatal crash - Telegraph

The thing you have to remember , is how many peeps use CBs and how many use 2ways or phones? It is no good being the only one in a group using a 2way if every one else is on a cb!

And a mobile is good if you need to call the cavalry.

Statistics show that using a mobile while driving lowers your reaction time more than if you had alcohol in your system. I assume this is because you're concentrating on talking as opposed to the road. Wouldn't using a cb while driving be just as dangerous?

Maybe, just maybe, it matters slightly less if you a bumbling along at 15mph in a lane than tanking it at 85 on a motorway?

True  but you will get the odd nugget who wants to talk to his mate while driving down the motorway

You can never legislate for ignorance or stupidity.

But then, again, " ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law" :D

What about talking to a passenger maybe we should put all drivers in a cocoon!

Or singing to the radio.... Heaven forbid changing channels :(.

Ban all music systems from cars.particularly the bugger that lives across from me !

The majority of drivers on the road seem to have got their license in a lucky bag never mind putting them in a cocoon . Nah I see where you're coming from, I merely quoted a statistic that I was read. Never said it was 100% accurate, then again I don't use my phone when I'm driving so I've no idea how much concentration it diverts. I do sing though, and dance :p

Haha yeah I know a girl who claims she was a better driver than me because she does the speed limit. Took her to a challenge drive when I was working at castle Combe. My score 98% ok I did work there and was taught to drive by proper racing instructors. Her score 23% the instructor said he wouldn't trust her with a shopping trolley.

Afternoon chaps, thought I'd post here rather than start a new thread because Ive got a similar-ish question.

Im looking at getting a radio comms set up for my landy (totally nothing to do with the missus watching far too many films like Convoy, Smokey & the bandit etc and her wanting one for her silly little car! :p), but what do people actually use? Are people still using mostly CB? A mate of mine is part of a radio club and he says hardly anyone uses CB anymore, most people have switched to amatuer/HAM radio that you need a (cheap) liscence for as it has more range and more people using it? True or not? Im part of the St John Ambulance and in our big off roaders and ambulances weve got PMR446 radios I think, thats pretty much the only experience Ive got of vehicle comms.

Also what do most of you use your radios for? Just off road/greenlane days or other uses? Just curious about that bit :)

HAM radio you also need to pass an exam for IIRC.

CB is good for 4miles, more if you got a good setup,
not many folk on thesedays, mine gets ears on if im bored and on a decent trip, round me there just 3 or 4 ham muppets on CB frequencys.

St John didnt used to use PMR radios, PMR just didn't have the range required to fully cover large showgrounds etc, IIRC it want PMR frequency either, we had to do a broadcast message before using them, and a after.

Ahh wasnt too sure about the Johnnomobiles.

So would you say best bet is to pick up a cheap'ish CB set up from Maplins or somewhere and see how it goes?
