these muffs, was thinking of getting one, but what effect on power does it have? after all, your covering up the intercooler too.

That's what puts me off buying a proper one, besides the 40 to 60 quid price. I always make mine either just the right size for the rad only or, on the one I'm currently making, I leave a hole cut out for the intercooler.

£25 - £60 on Fleabay for a rad muff ... even the cheaper ones look fine to me ... may get one myself :)

Hi Timtheenchanteruk, I tried a rad muff an it is a waste of time and money. I still have it in the garage. I found a piece of linoleum worked better and cost next to nothing. I found with the rad muff cold air was still coming through between the rad and the front grill. On my 200tdi even with a new Thermostat it still is a cool running engine and takes ages to warm up especially in very low temperatures. even with the rad fan removed. I never noticed any effect on power.

Hey SH ... hope you're well up there in Jockland.

Do you not just wear more clothes up there when it gets cold?

Having a heater must really emphasise you're a true southerner! ;)

Cold? Heating hasn't been off this year!

Yep, all good and settling into new home and enjoying the horses and land!

All the best

Winterizing a Defender?

So far on or in my 1998 300tdi CSW I have:-

AlliSport upgraded heater matrix (expensive, but very very good when the engine gets hot)
Bison Heated Front Windscreen (so I can see where I'm going before the engine gets hot)
Exmoor Trim Rad Muff (to help get the engine hot quickly - and it works very well)
Exmoor Trim heated front seat kit (i admit, i'm a wuss!)
DefenderVent side window demisting kit - Available from Mud Stuff.
Mud Stuff heated door mirror kit
Good quality ice scraper.

All that keeps me warm(ish) and more importantly, maintains vision on my 30 minute drive to work. These modifications aren't cheap, but as a lorry driver that starts work in the early hours every morning, they work very quickly in sub-zero temperatures at 3am. This minimizes noise disturbance, as I like my neighbours, and Defenders aren't known for silent running!

I never have to worry about batteries, as I start the engine before I use any of my winter kit. The front screen is defrosted, and the drivers seat warm by the time the ice has been scraped from the side windows. I have heat from the upgraded matrix within 2 or 3 minutes with the rad muff in place, to keep front and side windows from misting.

On my days off, when the weather is cold, my old Defender is defrosted and driving away in about half the time of the neighbours 2016 Mercedes C Class and their 2015 VW Golf. Makes me chuckle :D

A 300w heater will do little to change the temperature in the cab of a Land Rover.

You actually need about 2,000w.

You can tell it's getting cold round here with you see all the farmers with ply wood bungee corded to the frond grill.

Those heated seat pads/covers do quite a good job can remember using those in the old series 3 along time ago.
