Help!!The engine and Turbo have blown in my '03 Freelander TD4. I'm looking for replacement parts and some tip on best course of action.

When you say 'Blown' what exactly happened?

What's the mileage?

Was it due to oil shortage?

Hi there
what makes you think turbo/ engine is blown as these can suffer from engine breather filter clogging causing massive smoke out of exhaust and oil out of dipstick tube
many engines have been condemed as alot of garages dont know about this filter
worth checking
regards gaz

The car began to lose power, it's still driving but serious clouds of smoke blowing out of exhaust... car is still running, machanic advised new engine and turbo..... aparently it dumped a lot of oil in the process.. Thanks

How do I check to see if this is the case?

Replace the vacuum filter on top of the engine - I'm sure there's a thread on this somewhere. Basically take the engine cover and air filter assembly off and it's on top near the injectors. 20-30min job tops
It'll need doing anyway and is only a £25 DIY job so you've nothing to lose.

If the filter is blocked it will cause all of these problems
the filter must be changed every 12000 mls
only way to check is change filter
suggest you take it to a specialist that knows freelanders and get them to change
filters only £18 and half hour labour gotta be worth a go
hope this helps any probs ring me at work

Hi again Martinon,

Follow the advice of Nags100 and also download 'Rave' via links in this forum. The filter in question(oil separator) is part of an assembly described as 'Crankcase depression limiting valve' often called 'the cam breather' or 'PCV valve/filter/breather' You'll find the unit just behind the injectors after removing the air filter housing. Keeping the valve clean and changing the filter(oil separator) is vital for the wellbeing of the TD4 engine and Turbocharger.

Thanks everyone for your comments, aparently its gone passed all that and the engine is rattling, turbo is blown and it's basically screwed. I'm gonna have to go for a new engine and turbo. Ani deas where i coud oick one up or whats the easiest and cheapest way to get this baby back on the Road??

An 03 TD4 has a reasonable value providing the body and interior are tidy. I personally would contact an internet parts finder. My experience with them has been excellent, once you launch your request the responses tend to come in very quickly.

Good luck.D..

Hi there, it sounds like my problems are the same as yours!!
My turbo has gone on my td4 i think, did you get yours sorted and at what cost?
Cheers
Tom
