Hello everyone,

I'm looking to import a discovery 2 from the uk as they're way cheaper than france.
Has anyone experienced issues with the CT if the rear part of the chassis has been replaced. Or even patched?

I hear they're strict about it.

I just had to take off the road my current disco 2 because the whole chassis is rotten.
And my local independent lr garage said it's not worth repairing it.

Thanks

Matt

Like the mot test there are many different places you can go and some will be less bothered than others, if you have more than six months left on you Mot you can use that when you register it, if you are buying one to bring out you may be better to buy one here, they are a lot more expensive but depending where in France it comes from it may be rust free, my td5 is like new underneath, no rust, also a RHD if you want to sell it later will not be worth much, you could find a good 2000 td5 for 4 to 5k the same rhd might be 2500 but it will cost you another 1k to get it sorted and registered here with lights and C of C and might rust in 2 or 3 years the lhd you could keep 2 to 3 years and sell for 3500

Hey Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah I intend to keep it forever type thing and not selling it.

I looked really hard in france but I'm looking at twice the price at least.

For between 4 and 6 K You don't get much.

I've imported a couple of cars already from the uk. But they're usually in excellent condition.

I intend on spending between 4 and 6 K for a really good condition one in the uk.

Maybe it's better to Import from Spain instead but I don't have any experience with that. From the uk it's really easy. Just buy it and drive over.

Thanks.

I will get shot for talking about brexit on here but I know that the French have stopped allowing people to change there driving licences for french ones until they have decided what they are going to do after brexit, I do not know if same is happening for car registrations but if brexit does happen before you get it registered might be a bit harder, I have registered 3 cars here all with no problems, I think if you get one from Spain you have to be registered there to buy it, could become a real pain,
Like you say do not get much for your money in France, but if you are buying a 15 year old car from the UK the rust might already be there, what part of France are you taking it? if they do not salt the roads much it could be okay for a lot of years, other thing to think of is the lights for a pre-face are a lot cheaper, I have been told that the control technic will now allow the beam converters but think if it is going to be driven here alot it would be better to change lights

Yeah I heard about the driving licenses. I managed to get my licence last year it was a serious pain. Nearly 6 months! Lol

We have also registered a car from outside the eu.(Mexico) And all they care about is the conformity certificate. If it has one of them then they're happy.

So my reasoning is, if I get it like over the next week. I reckon I'll be able to squeeze it in. Lol.
Landrover France are really quick with the conformity certificate I thought. Like a week. From application to receiving it. This was 3 months ago.

Yeah that's a shame with Spain as there's loads of nice ones for sale there.

I fully expect some rust on it eh. I intend to get it sealed every couple of years.

I live in Chamonix so there's plenty salt on the roads here lol.

Yeah I noticed for the headlights it's like a quarter of the price. I fancied the newest of the series 2 as hopefully a little less maintenance maybe.

Yeah I'd prefer to have the proper headlights on. Im à by the book kinda guy.

My feelings is if I get it and the chassis survives a few years and everything else is good i'll probably replace the chassis.

I'm also worried if I get it sealed before doing the CT that might make it fail?

Thanks

Matt

I think you are right if it is a car that can be bought new in EU and you can get a C of C for it it is not a problem it is the grey imports without CE marks on everything that is harder,
I think if it is a wax or oil sealant will not be a problem, but not sure ,
I love my TD5 discovery and think it is a Land rover that works as a every day car but also will do so much more, I also have a Freelander 1, a good car but I would not ask it to pull a big trailer off road,
Good luck hope you find a good one

Having just imported a D2 from the UK ( got my full carte grise 2 days ago ) here's my 2c worth!
Having a typical rear chassis, no VIN number visible, I visited my local Controle Technique centre to consult on the best way to go.
Answer at mine was, " It's a Discovery 2, what do you expect? Restamp it yourself or get a garage to do it for you! "
So I got my local garagiste to do it for me for 20€, cheaper than buying the stamps. Other than that, swap your headlamps, early ones, I got a 2nd hand pair for 60€, but I believe that 300tdi ones fit and they're quite cheap new.
Make sure that each axle has matching tyres on each wheel, front to back can be different.
Quittus fiscale was 5 minutes, happy with a translation of my receipt, the original was a handwritten page torn out of a day to view A4 diary!
The Certificate of Conformity is where I had problems.
Before anyone says yes but, remember it's a French fonctionnaire you're dealing with an reason, the law and common sense mean absolutely rien!
I had a Landrover UK coc, sent my dossier in and was issued a temporary immatriculation number ( a WW plate )
My dossier was returned as the type, Land Rover Discovery ll TD5 S resulted in ordinateur dit non!
Despite all efforts, I was told I would have to get a French coc from Landrover France, having already supplied the UK one at £100, I was less than impressed at having to spend 240€, yes 240€ for effectively a single page letter on headed paper, before my dossier was accepted. To be fair, it only took about 12 days for it to come back with the new immatriculation number so she's now fully naturalised.
To counter this, one of my mates immatriculated his D2 on the UK coc with no issues like mine.
It all depends on who picks your dossier up and this was my first awkward fonctionnaire in 4 years here so I can't moan too much!

Thanks for that very useful bit of information about chassis vim. I'll make sure I get it done. But surely the vim in the dashboard is enough no?

How was the general condition of your rear chassis? Did you get any problems you needed to fix for the next time?

Here is what I had for a UK discovery I bought here in france. I was thinking at the time it'll not be too expensive to get running. Before the CT.

I was quite gutted after seeing this.

Not in Europe, most countries need to see 3 VIN numbers, chassis, windscreen and build plate.
My rear chassis is corroded but not perforated, I got an advisory for that but nothing more, but then I'd bought mine with 11.5 months MOT having just had £800 spent by the previous owner to get it through the test.
In summer once the chassis is nice and dry it's going on the ramps for a good going over with a needle gun and getting repaired wher necessary then Dintrol treated inside and out. We are lucky that salt is not used much here, mostly pusillane (not 100% on the spelling - crushed volcanic stone ) is used on the road in winter as road treatment.

Just imported a Volvo XC90 2008, no probs. on the dash board you can press a button and change the lights from RHD to LHD, the CT guy was a little up set I didn't have to buy new headlights,
but a valid CT is a valid CT. lots of very good cars/landys in Italy cheap only a days drive away. Cheap too. Just bought a P38 my second, will sell the Volvo XC90 to someone who tows horses they like the RHD's. So now to bring the red 1997 P38 up to spec. I'm in Eymoutiers 87120, 0665661940. Up for a cuppa anytime.

Hello all,
Just joined the LZUK, as we just found out that we will be relocating from Australia to one of a short list of spots in Europe (France, Swizterland, Netherlands, U.K.). I have a 110 that I will be bringing with me. If France becomes the final location, it appears that non-EU countries face a challenge at getting the CoC from Land Rover. Can anyone lend some insight/ experience? Are there alternative options for someone whom is very attached to their vehicle?
