Tax and duty on goods bought from within the EU
Alcohol and tobacco
There is no Customs Duty payable.
There is no import VAT payable, unless the goods are purchased or sent from a European Union (EU) 'Special Territory' - see below.
UK Excise Duty must have been paid regardless of the quantity and even if the goods are a gift.
It is the responsibility of the person that you're buying the goods from to ensure that UK Excise Duty is paid before they send you the goods. You should therefore expect the price you pay to reflect the payment of UK duty. If the price is very low, UK duty has probably not been paid.
If the person you're buying the goods from does not pay UK Excise Duty before they send them to you, the goods can be seized by customs on arrival in the UK and you may not be able to get a refund on their value. It's therefore a good idea to check with them whether Excise Duty has been paid.
In addition, cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco must bear UK health warnings and fiscal marks, and containers of spirits that are larger than 35cl must bear a UK duty stamp.
All other goods
If you're ordering or sending purchased goods (other than alcohol and tobacco) to the UK from another EU country then it's just like shopping in the UK:
there is no Customs Duty payable
there is no import VAT payable, unless you're ordering or sending purchased goods from one of the EU 'Special Territories' and if the value of the goods is £15 or more, however from 1 April 2012 all merchandise sent to the UK from the Channel Islands is subject to VAT - see below
there is no Excise Duty to pay

OK, so if im getting his right, as long as the car has had tax paid at some point in Holland there is no issue with bringing it in with no tax or duty due??

Thanks for all replies, I appreciate the help

Thats still 'old' as far as HMRC is concerned, might be different if it was a classic Bentley worth £50k. A guy I know imports Citroen HY vans on a regular basis (for restoration), he only pays VAT on the resale value because it is a business and he's VAT registered. Bringing in one old vehicle for private use wouldn't be a 'business'.

If its registered in belgium I can't imagine you'll have an issue, I.e. I can't imagine they'd ask you to prove tax has been paid.

If it's registered in an EU country, any taxes MUST have been paid for it to be registered.
If it's a personal import & not for a business, there are NO import duties or VAT to pay within the EU, unless it's classed as a commercial vehicle, & then the waters become a little murky.
The exception is for "nearly new" vehicles. In France to be free from vat & duty the vehicle must have over 6000km & be over 6 months old.
You go to the local tax office & make a simple declaration with copies of the invoice & reg document.

I live in France too & have imported a good number of vehicles (mostly Disco's) from Germany, also Motorbikes & Dodge pickups from UK & USA.

LIke I said in me first post No Import duties. will yu not fooking listen when I tell ya summat :p

I buy all my landies from other EU countries and the only thing i have had to payextra for is registering the things here in Poland with some dubious "recycling tax" of about a hundred quid, listen to Pikey he is right, downright infuriating but right ;)
