I'm new to this 4WD stuff and would love a Range Rover. I have joined the forum and hope to make some friends and benefit from your wealth of info and experience.

Is there a reputable buyers guide anywhere, and what can I get for £3k?

Welcome to the forum. I am sure you will find it of interest and no doubt someone will guide you in the direction of how to spend your cash. On the other hand you could always donate it to the P38 owners benevolent fund which offers counselling to distrought owners in their time of need!!

We are used to Volvo T5's in our household. I have just sold a 1977 Pontiac Firebird on ebay so have some cash to play with. Fancied a Range Rover.

So here I am. Where is the best place to look, there don't seem to be many advertised on here and I am already looking at the usual ebay, autotrader, pistonheads tec...........

Bewre of "Autobiographies" that aint and if the price looks too good to be true then it is!!
Check that EVERYTHING works as it should and there are no warning signs or lights on (Especially Book symbols on P38 climate control). Take it for a good run and get it up to normal temp.-take the oil filler cap off and hav a look inside, is it creamy??
If in doubt-walk away and give us a shout on the forum, thee are some good guys on here who are only too happy to throw their ten pennorth in.

I have seen a few, but they seem to be quite over priced, and high milers.

I'm sure I will find one eventually. Do you know of anyone selling on here?

Hi RPM. What were you looking for? A classic or a p38? I wanted a classic for ages and it took me over a year to find one. Paid £3000 in the end for a beauty, 1989 with 32k on the clock and full service history, garaged for life. If in doubt get an RAC check. I did and it was well worth it. Good luck mate.

I think £3k is a challenge, it is good money for a Classic which could well be the best car you ever bought or could just as easily be the biggest money pit in your life so far. £3k is a tad low to get a good P38 that would come with a full service history and has a good pedigree.

I think when you first think about buying a RR the question you should ask yourself is how quickly can I find £1,000 to donate to the garage and how much would it hurt my bank balance to do so, if it is going to hurt to much then I wouldn't even go as far as buying one as regardless of how it looks and drives they are prone to "expensive" faults and breakdowns and that is additional to the massive fuel bills and the potential massive tax and congestion charge bills (which will not just stay in London for long now)

If you can up your budget to £4k I think you would be much happier with what you could get for your money, good luck with your hunting though and hope you get a good one. I am on my third now, first was a 3.5 Classic which was an excellent car, next was a 3.9 Classic that was a financial suicide bid that almost worked and now I have the 4.6 P38 which so far has only cost me a new water pump.

We would all love to get a car which has never been off road, or driven in the rain, has a full main dealer service history, is pristine and has 20000 miles on the clock for low money. In reality-they don't exist. Realisticly, there are good ones out there for the money. Yes, I think a Classic is your best bet for your budget. As long as the bodywork is in good nick and the interior & electrics ar o.k. it usually follows that the rest of it has been looked after. High miles does not worry me as the engine is robust (The V8) and the only problem with 3.9's is the dreaded porous block/slipped liner syndrome. O.K. a new short engine will set you back £2grand-been there, cried the tears and got the T shirt, but they are a super motor and well worth a look. Take your time, don't get carried away and I am sure you will get a good un. As I say-if in doubt, before you jump in,get an independant assessment or give the forum a shout.

Well, I've surprised myself this time.

Found a 1995 4.0 Manual P38 in a mid shade of metalic blue, complete engine rebuild 14 months ago (4000 miles ago) due to oil cooler failure, and engine seizure. Receipts to prove by Land Rover dealer.

Service history, full MOT, new brake lines throughout, new air suspension pump, nearly new 18" discovery wheels and tyres, YR 2000 light upgrade.

Its a lower spec with cloth interior, and manually adjusting seats, with high miles (not on the engine), but unmarked inside and out.

I really wanted a manual, so I am prepared to take the sacrifice on the interior spec.
