I've got myself a 1984 Ninety - it's a bit of a dog if I'm honest but I do love it!
My main gripe is the fuel gauge goes straight to full as soon as ignition is turned on - I've been told that it's an earth problem (the live is shorting to earth somewhere) is there a way of "jerry rigging" it so it works?
I love the vehicle but the Russian roulette style of driving and wondering if it will make it to the next stop or run out of fuel is getting a bit wearing!

If the live was shorting it would or should blow a fuse.
Try running a new wire direct from the sender to the gauge.
The sender itself may be faulty or stuck up too but try the new wire first.
Just run it through the door to test.

Clean all contacts and fuses [including springy fuse holders] probably sort it. Welcome btw, nice to see another oldie onsite - so many are new, shiney Defenders - we're rare.........................

Thanks for the advice - I'll give it all a go and report back. I have a new sender to fit but I don't think the old one is at fault as the fuel light comes on when it is low so surely the float is ok?

New defenders are very nice but there is something nice about keeping an oldie going!

99.9% certain it'll be wiring or a bad earth if your light is working - of course a working light and a can in the back will be good enough.......................... to be honest if a dodgy fuel gauge is your biggest problem you're doing well! Good luck
