Hello guys,
I have just bought a freelander mk1 TD4 auto gs. Its lovely. But it has the following problems.

On accelleration or hills it smokes massively. Black smoke. it also constantly smokes at 60mph 2500 rpm on the motorway.

The accelleration above 60 mph is really really poor.

I dont hear the turbo spinning.. ( :( )

I know its not a racing machine but it is pretty poor at the minute.

I am a pretty useful mechanic but struggling to diagnose this.

electric injectors, ecm, electronic, injector control Get it hooked up for a computer check, could save you a few thousand as if it hydro locks your motor is fooked, bent con rods and other stuff

the air-filter ..

the turbo solenoid filter ( see .. http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/td4-lack-power-70mph-fixed-77147.html ) and the related vacuum hoses for leaks ..

the intercooler hose for leaks .. ( the usual suspect )

the crankcase vent system ..

get rid of the egr valve ( search this site for 'egr delete / bypass' ) ..

the injectors .. ( do a leakback test .. and/or take it in for a diagnostic test at a LR specialist )
 
I had similar issues with my 2002 Td4 i was getting smoke under acceleration/load and poor performance and MPG, after taking advice both on here and research i did the following

1. Stripped air intake manifold and cleaned out (could not believe the build up on it) and blow out with a compressor to ensure 100% dry and free of any debris.

2. Removed egr inspected cleaned and free'd up along with associated pipework ( I know its recommended on here to remove and i will if and when it fails just thought if its not broke.......)

3. Removed crankcase breather filter and replaced this is always overlooked at service's( its located under the injector wiring harness (seach on here you will get a great guide on changing/bmw mod.

4. Ran double dose's of millers ecomax through the fuel, first time i used i drove for about 10 mile keeping the revs high (not too high) alot of crap out the exhaust for few mile the started to clear, made some difference over the next couple fills now used at least once a month on a tank fill

5. Started using ultimate fuel always, along with ecomax monthly (feel it runs better on it and have had next to no repeat build up on intake /egr

Car before fixs was lucky to be getting 30mpg now on mixed run im getting between 37-41mpg and she is running sweet small puff in the morning on start up then clean as a whistle and acceleration has vastly improved.
 
guys thanks for all of your help... it was... torn intercooler hoses... on both sides. RESULT

Whilst i have the spanners out i will clean the crankcase breather filter. when i fill i will put a dose of redex through.
