Hi guys! ive finally got the disco mot'd and on the road, so now i need to start fixing comfort things. As im sure you all know, the nights are drawing in, and by the time work is done, the lights need to go on. Now, all of my lights work so thats not the problem. The issue that is bothering me is all of the internal lighting is buggered.

I say all, nearly every switch backlight has broken, and none of the heater controls are illuminated. The dash binnacle is fine, and i can see all my dials fairly clearly, other than they are in the terrible green colour! Basically, i need to know what the bulb types are that fit in the rear of the switches to illuminate? And also, the heater control backlight bulbs.

I dont know, but i would prefer a more crisp LED backlight, but not sure if they are made? I know they are available for the clocks, and i will be changing them in due course, but not sure about the switches etc?

Sorry for the length of this. A line the mrs hears far too often :p I do hope you can help, cheers

J

As I understand, the switch lighting cannot be repaired; each switch has to be replaced to cure the lack of lighting unless I have got it completely wrong.
I would be delighted if somebody can tell me of a way to replace the bulbs.

I don't know anything about Discos (I'm a P38 man) but I've done this on almost every car that I've owned by buying / acquiring a couple of spare switches and having a play with them. Then, when I know what I'm doing, and how, and I've got the necessary bits, I get stuck into the dashboard.

Most of the switch illumination is via LEDs soldered onto the switch board - you need to take them apart and solder on replacement LEDs to fix them. Following pic nicked from another site

The heater controls are illuminated by a couple of bulbs behind the panel. IIRC you remove the knobs (they just pull off), remove the fan speed slider, and you'll see two small brass coloured screws - remove these and the front of the heater panel can be removed - you'll see the bulbs easily then.

hi devon lad. I have just this min come in from replacing the bulbs in the switches(fog, heated window, rear wiper etc) of my 97 discovery. the bulbs are available from rimmer bros on part number STC1878. hope this helps

Cheers for the help guys, went down to the local suppliers and picked up some new blubs. All sorted and i can see which switch does what!

I stand corrected. Just pulled the switches out of mine and found one holder missing and several bulbs blown. I was sure that I had read somewhere that the whole switch had to be replaced.
