I have a tdi300 110 defender, and I have managed to lose my keys:doh:. And as I have no spare keys and a locksmith wanting £500:eek: to sort it I decided to hotwire it. my problem now is that I do not know what wires go to what terminals when i replace the ignition unit. I see that the that each terminal is numbered. so I am hopeing and praying that someone knows which wire goes were....

there are 4 wires
1 fat white cable
1 fat brown cable
1 thin red and white
1 other thin white wire but i cant remember what colour stripe and as my landy is currently 20miles away from me so I cant check

Surely if you are changing the whole lock it can't be so complicated?

Is there anti-theft involved in the car too?

Hotwiring might cause a whole lot of trouble ...

Records should be able to give you the key number and a key, but it will take time.

unfortunatly i have already hot wired it and removed the lock barrel to disable the steering lock. my problem now is correctly installing the new ignition/steering lock unit. What sort of trouble do you think hot wireing could have done?
 
Try downloading the workshop manual (see other threads) and the wiring diagram should have the terminal numbers on it.

Alternatively pay the £500 because as soon as you do you'll probably find your old keys Grrr

NONE of the wires needed removing from the switch in order to hotwire your vehicle. The plastic switch on the back of the ignition allows the vehicle to be sttarted. All the key does is turn a rod within this switch.

Assuming that you lost the fob/plip at the same time as the keys you will need a new remote fob programming unless you know and understand which bits of the vehicles operating system to bypass.

I looked it up in the Rave manual for you today. From the Defender 300 TDI Electrical Library, Connector Details.
When looking at the back of the switch:
Top Right Connector 94, White
Bottom Right Connector 28, Brown (live feed to switch)
Bottom Left Connector 90, White and Red, (Crank feed to starter solenoid)
Top Left Connector 99, White and Orange

The picture is a little hard to read but I'm pretty sure I'm right. I would check it by just turning to position 1 with Connector 28 (brown) and Connector 94 (White) connected, if the radio comes on then they are right. If the ignition lights come on then switch over connector 94 and 99. These are the two that are hard to see which way round they are from the photo in the manual.

With the help of a mate I gently pulled the top of the driver side door enough to slide a coat hanger through and well im sure you can guess the rest, with out as you say posting a DIY guide for tea leafs.

Then disabled the alarm I spent hours wireing up real neat:mad:. It then took me another 2 hours to disable the steering lock. Im sure I could have done it quicker but i didnt want to add to my ever increasing repair bill:(.
But actualy starting the thing took ooh all of 30 secs.

I dont think I would make a very good car thef though, gone in 60secs???? More like gone sumtime next week:D

I have now fixed my landy and was very happy to find that nothing eles was broken, Just wanted to say cheers to every one for there advice, especaly Graham for the wireing guide.:D:D:D

I had the same problem with my disco, but snapped the key. If you contact your main dealer they will order you a new key from the vin number. It costs all of £22.75 IIRC.
