trying to wire up a 12s plug with a split charger, not a landrover one just one i bought of the shelf at a local motor factors. I need help with the connection that goes to an ignition live, as i understand the td5 alternator is not right for this, so i was thinking of picking it up from the wiper motor. Would this be ok or will the Gremlins in the ECU think its christmas and give me no end of grief.

Do NOT take a supply from any other working item.
All you will do is overload circuits, blow fuses, or burn wires.

At WORST take a separate connection right from the battery but FUSE it immediately and fit a relay that is tripped ON with the IGN.

There are several good live points in Discos.

it only needs 3volts, but i think i will take your advice charles and run a new connection with a relay, or scrap the idea and get the genuine parts from LR

Whether it needs 3 volts or 12 volts is irrelevant.

Your take-off connection WILL provide full battery voltage of a NOMINAL 12 volts, meaning an actual more like 13.8 volts.

I think you are saying the device will only draw a CURRENT of 3 amps.
Is that right?

So, it's a device operating on a 12 volt system, which draws 3 amps, which is a total POWER draw of about 30 watts.

That is not a lot, and a fairly light cable will happily handle 3 amps.
Be sure to fit a 5 or 10 amp fuse - not more.

I bought a split charge relay and installed it on my disco td5 for the 12s socket at towbar.I found the alternator wiring in the battery box where the ecu is, the alternator wire is the brown and yellow in the wiring with it's own connector block.connect the sensor wire from the split charge relay to that wire with a 2 or 3 amp fuse and then the main feed wire of the relay put to the battery with a 25 amp fuse then run the two wires for your charging and fridge supplys down the chassis and locate the relay under the bonnet near to the fuse box. That way you don't have to do anything inside the disco.Hope that helped.
