I am having problems every now and then with my ignition key not turning once incerted into the barrel. 9 out of 10 times the key turns no problem then just once the key goes in but will not turn. Usually when you are in hurry.
Anyway you have to pull the key out & try again, and again, and again until it finally turns & the engine starts.
Its a 51 reg TD5, I only have the one key which is the key complete with the two botton.
Question is can I replace the ingition barrel or do I need to get the whole thing re-coded with replacement fobs!!!!! Mega money required

I've just had a similar problem, the wife broke the key off in the barrel.
Got an automotive locksmith to get the bit out (£55.00). Had to send the steering lock to him as no-one up here in the Highlands can do it. So now I'm stuck with just one key,
but I discovered on eBay this LANDROVER DISCOVERY 2 td5 KEY BLANK BLADE NEW- REMOTE on eBay (end time 11-Dec-09 19:03:47 GMT)
@ under £6.00 inc p&p it's less than the £80.00 charged by the main stealers.
Just stick the key in a vice & pull - you'll end up with the blade & a key fob.
Get the blank cut, put the plastic collar on from the old blade, snap back into the fob & you're there. No programming - it's the same key-fob.
Hope it helps.

have you tried to spray wd40 or even better grahpite spray in the lock barrel?
worked a treat on my disco 300tdi when the lock was doing the same as yours.
spray it in give it half a dozen turns on and off then leave it to soak, at one point i couldn't start the disco but never had a problem after wd40 was used.

hope that helps and saves you some money!

Just got a key cut at timpson for £7.50, & it works. When I say it works it doesn't have the buttons on the key the way the landrover key has, but it does open the door & it starts the car no problem.
I tried opening the door with the new key, no problem key turned & all doors unlocked. Opened the door and the alarm went off, quicky turned the alarm off with the genuine key & the new key started the car no problem!
Landrover quoted me over £100 for a spare key

Getting a key cut is no problem. Unfortunately it's usually the fob that stops working! I have the same problem with the lock barrel. Graphite has helped, but I think it's basically down to wear, and I'm going to have to change it sooner or later. Usually happens when I push the key in hard without thinking. if I'm gentle it's OK (as the bishop, inevitably, said to his thespian paramour....)
