...would you reckon it was the output shaft bearing?

(This isn't mine btw... mine has slightly more mud on it!)

mine looks a bit like that , i was told its normal to have a bit of play in there. that is the transfare box side aint it?
 
It's the front output shaft int it? An you shunt have any play, well p'raps a reely reely little bit 'cos it's a ball race with a taper roller behind it. I'll take a pic of the one I took off if I get round to it.

It should have no play at all, yes they're taper roller bearings but they are preloaded using the pinion nut and a collapsible spacer.
 
front end of a transferbox dont have taper roller bearings...they're the old ball type set in a race. The flange on that looks fine it's just that the mud sheild has taken a knock (that lip that runs around the edge..stops most of the mud and little stones from getting caught between the flange and the seal)
if it's not leaking dont mess with it..:)
