And you were after something economical, easy to work on and maintain, fairly cheap to buy and fairly common second hand, diesel, fair amount of power but not too much and not much hassle to fit, what engine would you choose?

The problem is just about any modern diesel of 2 litre or above capacity will murder an lt77.

Ive spent the last 4 days in an auto toyota verso thing and quite frankly its a piece of carp, BUT was still way better then any defender for journey work!

That's why I am not after power , the LT77 isn't a bad box and its far from weak if you don't hammer the crap out of it. Basically I want an engine much the same as my 19j or a 200tdi , easy to work on , simple , no electronics etc etc but I also want economy , cheap , plentiful etc.

Does such a thing even exist??

yes a 200tdi and g suffix lt77

Have you seen the price of fender 200's lately James? Those are really not cheap, even disco ones are getting dear, and I am under the impression parts are becoming hard to come by these days? Not to mention most 200's these days are way way over the hill by now.

most engines suitable are way over the hill but a tdi is superbly rebuildable

Ive got two one is okay and other is well shagged both still run and drive pretty much the same, just one breathes a lot more at the end of the journey!
Tbh Ive not noticed a shortage of parts for them, everything I want is online.

It sounds easy and I know it wouldn't be difficult but I really cant be arsed rebuilding an engine and don't fancy spending 600+ on something that will probably also require working on thus costing even more, I know it would be an easy install though, even a disco one , it could well be the path of less resistance.

300 tdi, still plenty about, easy replacement for a 19J and bolts up to a 4cyl LT77.

They are cheap enough still, I reckon a better choice than a 200, how close to the bulkhead do they get to when you use an lt77 and do you need a modified exhaust to suit the engine, I'm sure you would cos it will sit further back in the engine bay?

The 300tdi fitted to a LT77 sits exactly where the 19J sits. A standard 300 exhaust down pipe fits if you take 6" out of it and put a cut out in the engine crossmember.

Easy to rebuild though and all the main bits are available still

The parts shortage for 200TDis is a myth. OK, the breakers aren't full of them but you can get anything from a rocker valve cap to a short engine. Have a look at Turner Engineering's website for an example. And they must be the simplest conversion - purely nuts and bolts.
