A friend is considering breaking his defender as it needs a fair bit of work to get it back on the road and he dont have the time or funds to do it. So really just working out how much cash it could generate if broken.

Its a 1991 original 200 tdi with a nice few mods which include:

3inch lift with +4inch pro comp shocks and X4 dislocation cones
unknown make winch
4 pin rear axel with 110 breaks and ap calipers
mint engine and box
exmore seats x3
etc etc

Any ideas what sort of cash something like this would usually make?

Or would it be any interest to someone as it sits?
It could do with a bulkhead, or just patch it up, a back door as its been converted to a county and back door was never fitted and paint. Its was totally prepped then fitted back up as it was back on the road for a while. All door shuts have been painted in Ford state blue so will need a quick scotch over to remove the tree sap etc and masking.
Would be a shame to see it broken as it would make a real nice defender.

When I originally said welding I had the bulkhead in mind. The chassis looks totally mint so ive re-worded it to "work".

Ill ask him but its hard to work out what it's worth. I know finished he wanted 4k for it.
So lets say he knocked 1k off so 3k?? That's a guess by the way as I have no idea!

At £3k just about everybody will have lost interest. Without an MOT and needing a fair bit of work £1 to £1.5k is more like it I would have thought depending on inspection.

Like I say I have no idea. But what I do know is 1k is no where near what it's worth. The engine and tyres are worth that alone!
That's why he was going to break it.

But then you have to factor in the time and effort to break it. If it'd pass an mot as is it's stupid not to get a 12 month ticket on it. It would double the interest.

irrelevant! completely irrelevant im afraid. :(

Egghsakerly.

Take the price that you think its worth, and subtract 20% because it just isnt worth that ;) (i know, i tried to sell my TD5 for what i wanted, but it isnt worth what YOU want, its worth what someone is prepared to pay, and with no ticket and tax its worth DICK. Sorry, i just isn't, if you want the maximum for it, then break it, but it takes time and effort, if you want a quick sale then sell it cheap.

good luck.

Someone has just sold an '87 2.5 n/a that's been stood since 2006 for a grand on ebay so I'd take a load of pictures and sell it with a honest description as it is or stick a new foowell on it and mot it. But 3 grand as it is, you've got no chance, especially on here.... Everyone knows what they're worth.

So selling it as it is is not really a viable option then! He's either going to break it or get it painted an stick a m.o.t on it.

He said the lowest he would take is 2.5k which don't seem realistic according to you lot.

Check the prices on Auto trader and Ebay and that will give you an idea.
I found at least 2 TDi Defenders on Auto trader not too far from me with plenty of MOT and look to be in good order for under 3k.

For an unfinished project it would be around 1k subject to inspection.

If he wants the most from it then he will need to break it but dont expect it to go very fast if you want good money for the parts.

Yeah totally understand. Would be no point though as the engine sold as a conversion and tyres would fetch that alone.
