Having a senior moment
You all know that I am involved with tracking systems.... And that I actually write the software that goes in them.

I keep having ideas that may or may not work... and may or may not make me a few quid.

Without wanting to spam the site... I would dearly love to be able to present ideas for updated facilities to everyone to see what the reaction might be.

If you would prefer that I do not do this then by all means let me know... other wise I shall post my new ideas tomorrow.

Like I say: I am not trying to spam you guys... My problem is that you folks are the only ones that know whether an idea is something you would pay for or something that you would avoid.

My passion is avoiding or inhibiting the tea leafs from grabbing our favourite vehicles. You may feel that some of my ideas have no merit... or that you have ideas that could be combined into a single solution. I would be glad to hear opinions but I understabd that this is not an advertising site for spurious security device spammers.

Did I make this point clear? or am I too drunk after an evening's programming of a posh new system to notice?

Not even 5000 posts and yer wanting to spam yer ****e ;)
Fair comment - wouldn't ask for any less......

I int stoopid....you can't fool me :suspicious: You can't transfer cheese between accounts.....I know........I tried

Don't really understand all this tracking stuff though  I'm sure it's a good idea but I just want something simple and cheap that tells me where me Landy is if it gets 'alf inched..........or I forget where I park it

I have probably under-egged the pudding here, and apologies if so ....

I'm familiar with the Datatag type setup ( Yamaha system ) ...

I would 'like' ( and i appreciate that it may be far more complex than i first think... )
a trasmitter / transponder type device ( possible multiple ones ), affixed discreetly to my landy, - and a prog on my laptop that i can switch on, and will show me on something like google maps or similar.. exactly where the vehicle is, in realtime.

it sounds like a relatively simple ask .. it may even exist, i dont know ... but the key thing is, it needs to be simple, cause I'm not an IT geek and need it to be useable and user-friendly.

Does that give any food for thought ?

I want to hear your ideas, if anyone gives you any hassle, well, they can get knotted - it's beneficial for us all.

I agree with beastie - something simple, no subscriptions just easy online tracking etc...

I want to see who nicked my vehicle and get it back but would prefer not having it nicked in the first place.

OK here's the idea...actually I have already written the program...

A simple device that installs straight to the vehicle in the same way that mine do now. It is only the functionality that is different.

Operated by two methods... text message and phone call.

Using a text message you can get the lat/lon and speed/direction information of the vehicle. You can request that the vehicle consider itself Parked and notify you if it is moved.

Additionally the vehicle has a number of switches. You can activate these switches by telephoning the vehicle and using dtmf or by texting the request.

Secondly you can have a series of different telephone numbers set up to receive the alerts.

You would be able to monitor certain switches... door switches perhaps, or motion detectors...

All this is pretty standard but here's the good part...

You would be able to telephone the vehicle and request that a hidden camera take a photograph and email that photograph straight to your email address...

You could also request that you "listen in" to the vehicle... actually hearing what the toerags are saying in live time.

That's basically it.

It does do more stuff but that's the basics... the essential difference between the one I have now and the new one is that the new one has no web page on which to view the vehicle. You would be given lat/lon and could enter those into google maps or whatever; but this removes the reliance on the internet technology (apart from the email).

Thoughts?

Sounds excellent...but what are the ballpark costs? Is it reasonably cheap as it is using phones/phonecams?

How about something similer to the I phone find my phone app

Giving you a google map of location and a hidden cam that takes pictures of the driver.
Also a remote immobilise option then an anti tamper alarm but the kicker here is an anti jammer function so when jammer is off it data bursts the info to your smart phone.

Not impossible. But needs to cost to be around £300-£800

I am working on costs right now. Gaz... that's effectively the system we are running now but without the cam option.

Here’s your competition.

GPS/GSM/GPRS Tracker+Hard-wired Car Charger+2*battery | eBay

£37 and it does everything you said with the exception of the camera and switches. It does have a very basic geo-fencing function as well as optional notifications if it exceeds a set speed or if it moves at all (which isn’t super reliable to be fair, as hiding it is a metal Land Rover is bound to get the odd false position change).

Also there is an iPhone app available that controls it (basically, it composes all of the many different sms messages for you so you don’t have to look in the manual all the time).

I really like the idea of the camera and switches though. It would be interesting to see how much more I’d have to pay for those features.

If I can make some suggestions, it would be good to be able to read some inputs remotely also, and have some intelligent commands, such as wiring one of the outputs to an engine kill and telling the device to only kill the engine when the speed drops to zero MPH for a few seconds (e.g. so the engine is only killed at traffic lights rather than at speed on the motorway).

Already have that option Mund. Remotee monitoring of the inputs is live time via the site on the eoriginal program.

The new program allows you to decide whether you want to be notified every time the state changes for that particular input

Mund.... that item you posted up is actually nothing like the equipment we use. It's a bit like posting a Vitara as competition for a competition spec 90.

I won't go through why... but there's a sticky on the stolen landy forum that explains the main differences between cheap chinese imports... and proper stuff.

Gaz.... let me put a final price on it this evening and I will PM you if that's ok?

That is spot on thank you but it will have to whate about 4 weeks when I'm back in the uk. I will respond to the pm. But will have some questions such as fitting, system and sim or subscription that sort of thing and what the effect on insurance could be.

I do like the idea that you have had though. :)

All questions welcome mate. You are welcome to a full and frank conversation about it before committing... and I am sure I can find a couple of epoepl to vouch fo rhte system too if needs be!;)
