yours is a clone....

Er I would have assumed so as the distributer want £1654 +VAT for one so at £65 I didn't for an instant assume it was the genuine one, but as long as it dose what it says on the box I'm not worried and as I said if it lasts 1 year-18 months I haven't lost my left kidney:D

Nothing wrong with clones though - the whole Volvo community is based around cloned DICE units!

Owners of the pucker ones are paying for updates and support. The expensive ones also have Bluetooth and software that doesn't need hacking on to the PC.

Mine has bluetooth as well . It seems to work well which is what I wanted and cheaply. I understand the argument regarding time effort etc these companies put into these things but I'm sure it isn't £1654 + VAT per unit. The mark up must be enormous on the things hence the cloned units availability. I did look at the Creader X431 units but the cloned ones seem to be hit or miss with some working well and others just being a nice coloured brick. I do think the Hawkeye etc are just making money off people with there units limited to one vehicle and then charging half as much again for another vehicle licence. Anything that is seen as expensive / overpriced is bound to be a target for cloning unfortunately.

The main problem with cloning is the originator of the product doesn't get any money. The development work goes into tens of thousands per month. Perhaps more. The Volvo crew may have cloned units but how will that effect the originator of the product? If they don't make a return they go bust or don't bother with more development for upgrades or future products. So future products won't exist.

I can appreciate the cost difference and why peeps go for the cheaper option. Thing is if they're prepared to clone someone's product, there's no way of knowing if what they say on the tin is what you get. They're crocks after all.

I should confess I give out pdf manuals on ere but no one sells them so I don't see the harm. That's completely different to a builder not being paid as someone finished the job off for him. I can understand the cost issues people have. Especially when they may not use it often.

Back to the diagnostic discussion...

Just spotted rimmer bros are selling the hawkeye with a second unlock code as a special offer, at the normal price. Few others are doing the same. That would allow it to work on 2 types of vehicle. Some sellers are selling the additional unlock codes at a discounted rate too.

I think the icarsoft i930 looks good, butI found out it only works on Jags, LR & RR and wont reset the oil and service lights.

I was advised the icarsoft CR Plus (ebay item161736189531 ) has more features, works on pretty much every vehicle on the market.

But i've read the icarsoft devices wont connect or reset the ABS on the TD4.

Can anyone verify either icarsoft device.

For the money, there spot on.

The only issue I have heard of with the i930 is that it wouldn't connect to the early TD4 Teves Mk20 ABS unit. I'll connect to the earlier Wabco and main TD4 era Teves Mk25 - but had issues with the Mk20.

I bought the Icarsoft cr plus multi brand tool . Its the latest model after the i930 and lr2 versions and covers quite a lot of vehicles.
Compared to the hawkeye it doesnt cover the ccu or alarm system programming.
It does cover the 4 main sections, the engine , the gearbox, the abs system and the seat restraint system.
It works either with just the ignition switched on or the engine running.

With the engine running you activate a hidden engine page where you can monitor various modules in the car for example the '4 cylinders'.

This was the area I was interested in.

With the engine running and turned off, I tried connecting to the gearbox module page, instantly got an on screen error message, unable to connect.

With the engine running I viewed the engine section and checked the cylinder data stream. All four cylinders showed '0' , no fluctuations in readings like you'd expect whilst the engine was running.

I tried an Auto Logic diagnostic tool on the same td4 and that instantly came up with a 'cylinder balance control' error ! The icarsoft didnt pick this up !

I cant speak for the vehicle specific i930 for landrover and jaguar, but I can say that the icarsoft cr plus multi needs some work on the software. There are two versions of software for the freelander page i.e v11 and a newer v12. Im hoping there wil be an improved software update for it that rectifies the issues I have experienced with the tool. I have informed icarsoft and await their reply.

From experience you pay a bit more for the hawkeye, buts its consistant with the diagnostic info and does a few things more i.e ccu and alarm . The info the icarsoft gives out is questionable.

If anyone else on here has the cr plus, can you confirm if you have any problems with it.

Cheers

I'm thinking of getting a D3 soon so would need a reader that can access all systems on it. This looks good for the money, provided it does what it says.

Elm systems only access OBD2 compliant engine ECU's.
I have a cheap blue tooth Elm tool that connects to my GS4 via an app called Torque. This reads every OBD2 compliant ECU I've tried it on, including my V6 Freelander. It only has access to the engine ECU though.

I just thought I'd update this post as it's resurfaced.
I did get a D3 which I still have at present. I also got diagnostic do dad for use on it. I ended up with a device call an IID BT tool. This is an amazing device the allows all sorts of options and updates, using a special app on my Droid. I'm hoping that in time, the IID will be able to do similarly trickery on the Freelander 1.

Nodge68: is the OBDII device bluetooth ?
Ive read these bluetooth devices cannot clear or read srs, abs , air bags. Is that true?

No. The IID BT tool communicates on the CAN bus. It's not a generic ELM327, not even close. Currently the IID only supports the D3/4 , FFRR, RRS and FL2. It is a very powerful bit of kit that is able access every ECU in the vehicle, read and clear codes as well as give live data on the ECUs. It will do everything that T4 can plus apply software updates, giving the ability to add later vehicle features and improvements. For instance, my D3, being a 2005 didn't have lane change 3 flash indicators. However a BCU flash (update) to the later 2007 on software added 3 flash indicators to it. I did a similar update to the dash ECU adding the clock to the digital display that only appeared on the 2007 onwards vehicles. There's a host of other updates or BCU modifications that are possible too like altering the ON time for interior light delay. Basically you can set up a whole host of things, things that even LR can't do with there T4 diagnostic tools.
Pat and his team at Gap who make this tool have worked very hard to get it as comprehensive yet user friendly as possible.
I really hope they do make it work with the electronics of the Freelander 1 as I believe there's no better device on the market.

I didn't want to but in when the thread was just about the i930 etc, but now people are talking about other tools I think it's reasonable to point out my alternative.
It supports all of the Freelander 1 engine ECUs, including L series, TD4, K series with MEMS1.9 or MEMS3 (in full dealer mode, not just EOBD) and the VK6, also in dealer mode.
Jatco transmission is working.
On the TD4 injector balance is working in the lab (my wife's car).
As of today I got the airbag protocol working.
I don't think that it will be too many weeks before the ABS is working too.
This is a UK designed, made and supported tool. The development is done with a real Freelander using a real LR T4 tool.
It also supports the TD5 some sellers claim works on the i930 but doesn't.

My IID doesn't work on the FL1 so isn't related to this thread. I was simply updating the thread a year later, then answered a question that was asked.
Your tool looks a useful to the FL1 owner. Better still if you can make it work on a table or smart phone. ;)

Android is a possibility, and it already works on Windows tablets with an OTG cable. The requirements for a laptop are basically any old junk that you might have sat in a cupboard (or can buy for £25-30) with Window 2000 and up (XP is much easier though). I think that we are pretty unique in supporting Linux and Mac OSX laptops already. We can even do a Raspberry Pi edition if people want.
If someone owns a FL1 as well as a TD5 Disco2 or Defender, or Rover / MG then it really is (I think) a no-brainer.

I have the iCarsoft LR II tool which I originally bought for my Range Rover. Trying it out on my Freelander I 1.8 petrol, I found that it would not communicate properly with several modules including the MEMS engine management. It would however, communicate with the engine if you used it in basic OBDII mode.

Had several email exchanges with the manufacturer but the engineer was always either out of the office or busy.

Gave up in the end but not impressed. Will stick it on eBay as it didn't do much on the Rangie either and I bought the IID Tool in the end.

Just in case anyone is looking at getting an iCarsoft i930, I bought mine and confirm that it can access all modules on a 2005 Facelift Freelander. It does not have the ability to program keys unless I haven't found it yet, but it does have access to ABS and SRS. Got mine for £90 inc VAT & delivery from ukprodiagnostics.co.uk.
