"manifest"

wot a load of rubbish.
AND it's sexist, or as we have to say now "misogynistic" (apparently wimmins can't be sexist any more.)
Should be "personifest".

I give up. :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
I thought manifest referred to a bunch of promises, made to the electorate to garner their votes, that were promptly ditched post election.
Perhaps Mr Starmer needs to keep up the " visualization and affirmation to help.. imagine achieving something you want, in the belief that doing so will make it more likely to happen"*. Then "write it down, ... speak it into existence... see it daily and (hope) it happens**.

Then click his heels together and wish, really, really hard.

I prefer the more original "obvious". Manifestly no longer the case (ahem).

Am as one with the Stan.

I think you means "manifestO".
I was on about the flipping dictionary's word of the year, which is now used as a verb and has little to do with the original meanings.
Call me an old stick, but I prefer words to mean what they mean and not be hijacked in this way.
I can see that from your second line you knew exactly what I was talking about.

I saw no political angle to it at all, wasn't mentioned on the clip. Just people who thort that once they had gobbed off to themsleves about how marvellous they were and how they were going to achieve something, they then went on and did it.
TBH on the news items the talking heads/eggsperts said that "manifesting" actooly didn't make people go beyond their capabilites. all mumbo-jumbo snake oil.
Get real people.

Since we're at it, ere @Stanleysteamer , how about a Mandate? 😁
Hmmm!
how do you feel about it?
I haven't seen anything about it.
I have at least some idea of what it means.
In the old days a man would be half of a date, now two could be both sides, or no side or.....
no sorry can't go on....

give me strength! i think I'll disppear down a personhole.;)

Language evolves, it always has, there is nothing wrong with that.

It leads to multiple anomalies in our language but there is nothing wrong with that either.

If I said "incantation" most people would take that as some form of supposed magical phrase.

Yet its opposite 'cantation' means music written for a soloist.

In English we have many negative words still in common usage where the positive no longer effectively exists.

Explain to me the difference between 'enchanted' and 'disenchanted'....clearly opposites yet interchangeable

'discordant' will be clearly understood used in any context but wtf does 'cordant' mean?

How does the negative of a noun exist when it's positive has no meaning?

I cannot believe, especially on this thread, that you have just used these last two words. (Deleted in my reply)
If I even replied to your post, in its entirety @Hippo would give me an angry face for that as it would include naughty words.
Cannot understand your anger over this.
I did say "call me an old stick" so if you want to do that please do, but such strong feelings to me seem a little over the top. And you know very well that I can count on the fingers of one hand, possibly of one thumb, the number of times I have criticised your comments on my posts. So yes, I am shocked by such vehemence.
So, to answer your questions:
Cordant is an adjective that means in agreement or harmony:
  • Etymology
The word cordant comes from the Middle English period (1150—1500). It is derived from the verb cord and the suffix -ant.
  • Examples
The earliest known use of the word cordant is in the Bible (Wycliffite, early version) before 1382.
I think you will find that you can only "negativise" a word that already exists.
"Explain to me the difference between 'enchanted' and 'disenchanted'....clearly opposites yet interchangeable"

I do not understand in what way these two words can be interchangeable. Interchangeable means you can substitute one for the other but you cannot, they areclearly opposites as you say. . Being "enchanted" means being delighted, as if someone had put a "happy" spell upon you.

“Enchanted” means under a spell, bewitched, or magical. It can also mean to feel delightfully pleased or charmed. For example, you might describe a frog that turns into a prince when kissed as enchanted.

Here are some synonyms for “enchanted”:
bewitched, charmed, entranced, magic, magical, and spellbound.

Here are some antonyms for “enchanted”: Disenchanted, Disabused, and Disillusioned"

Words fail me! (Well, not really!);)

I think its just too heavy & the welded rings are too weak, plus we did notice that this one has come up the slipway on the
opposite side..one side has wooden green heart fenders running the whole length the other had rubber fenders running up
& down roughly every 2 meters so they are biting into the concrete. it slid up on the timbers the last time. I did heat the last 2 rings up with the gas axe but it made no difference. Its salt water btw.

If I remember I'll get some pics of the busted steel.

lol at the hot seat tho. :D:D
Could yer pullit wiv yer clown truck?

Plumber cannot "operate before the 27th. :(
And that is the one day in the next couple of weeks when we will be out all day and the do cannot be moved, so it'll be further on than that before it can happen.:(:(
Think I will have to have another go myself. See if the present pump is salvageable in anyway. I cannot make things worse than they are.
Hey ho.
But it is miserable living in two rooms.
This time I'll drain the system. Flip the gate valves!
;)
Iffit needs new parts just by em. At this time of year peeps may run oot or low due to demand. After yer'll have the old bits to take apart and play wiv.

Eye has hadda wurd wiv me wood eggspurt. He ses brickets are scraps of wood left over and squashed togeffer tight. They is designed to wuk in an enclosed burner so that yer can control the air flow, and therefore the temp, which controls the speed of burning. Gerrit right and they can be very efficient. But that is hard to do. They is compressed so designed to burn slow, because air can't gerrinto them. So ideal fer over night heating int background. Or a slow gentle heat in the day. They ain't fer roaring fires unlike humans that burn well in an oven where yer can turn up the gas.

You're quite right about the last 2 words now deleted.

There's no anger in the post, simply a subject that interests me

How the language has evolved fascinates me too. English has had an awful lot of external influences over the centuries and learning how some of todays words came about can be really interesting.

This statement leaves me discombobulated… 🤔😉
