There's many different stories about this. The one eye favour came from LR. Post war steel was rationed. They got all they could and wanted it for use buildering rover cars. Aluminium was more easily available so they used that.

There's a lot of myths like tratters being built as a stop gap when post war sales of rover cars was low. The time and effort to get tratter production going couldn't justify only a few years production. But the myths will continue.
This is exactly what I have read and believe as well.
Sales were not low, people were screaming for cars but they were not allowed to sell to the home market, they i.e. the govt, needed exports to help the economy. The phrase they used at the time was "Export or die" so they sold loads of cars to the USA and fortunately they devolped a real liking for Brit sports car particularly.

Still a shame that some journo put this out unedited.

Also maybe worth mentioning that although they could build planes out of ally, i.e. they had the knowhow, no one was up to, or "into" making monocoque car bodies out of aluminum, just using it with separate chassis.

So LR found enough steel for chassis and used Birmabrite as they thought it'd wear better on farms and in other "poor conditions" areas, like the military, country estates, forestry, etc. which of course they successfully did. No one ever DREAMED they would become Sloane Rangers' fashion accessories.

Also (again) due to the shortage of cars people took to driving around in war surplus jeeps and found they lasted a lot longer than originally intended, (nine weeks)!

I am bald by choice, the alternative being some archaic comb-over or simlar. It worked for Yul Brinner and I'm much more charming.

BTW. There's no way that coin is gonna get you a trolley at Lidl.
