you can be looking straight ahead and still not recognise the car in front is stopped/going slow. its all about perspective and whether an object moves/grows/shrinks relative to the last time you looked at it
its one of the reasons people dont see bikes, the percentage difference in size doesnt change much until its very close, by which time its too late
if the car in front isn't moving left or right in relation to your head, you don't see its stopped until it gets much closer, at 70 mph that doesnt give you enough time to process the new data, take foot off accelerator, move across and stamp on brake

I think it is a human trait to look to see dangers that are "what we expect to see" and our mind dismisses things that are not in our sphere of experience or that our subconscious says "doesn't belong here". This is what I think happens.

Personally, I am always looking for the out of place bear.

Well if you drive along a motorway "not expecting" to see broken down vehicles or emergeny services vehicles on the hard shoulder, you shouldn't be driving on a motorway!!!

It's what the flipping things are there for.

Hence the huge outcry against "Smart" motoways. Unless SMART stands for "Singularly Mad Areas of Road Transport".

Roads built by oxyMORONS.

got a 'unpaid postage' note off the postie.. thats annoying!! dont know what it is!! not expecting anything
Mate of mine got one when I lived in France back in1978. He came from Belfast and had a load of dead funny mates. We drove into Lille, he paid the postage from Ireland. It was a brown envelope, no stamp just an address and inside it nothing but one single condom!

At least it was still in its wrapper!
You should be watching the road not other drivers 🤣
They are always in the car right in front of me which I then watch like a hawk.

Clever clogs!!😜😜😜

That's why they invented brake lights, and even put up high level ones.

its not a silver bullet, people still dont see them, like you said, people drive into the back of fully liveried emergency vehicles lit up like a christmas tree.. some dude with a high level brake light has no chance
Of course it isn't there is no cure for stupidity and or lack of attention, just pointing out that from the dawn of motoring people recognised this was a problem, and cars didn't go nearly as fast then as they do now.

Very windy but still hot here.
Just finished unblocking the drain, phew, and as I was working with septic tank effluent I had to be suited and booted. so have sweated buckets.:(
So indoors cooling down before going out to tackle yet more weeding and cutting back of Virginia Creeper.
Physio for W yet again this arvo. It is doing her a bit of good but makes a big hole in the afternoon.

Guid afternoon
And back home safe n sound after a generally epic ride. North end of Loch Lomond was stop / start due to coaches and 2 wide loads under police escort.
Went as far as Bridge of Orchy but got fed up with the number of coaches, caravans etc mobile chicanes....
