I would have probably got away with not having personal ID on me as Pat would have vouched for me and she had hers on her. The car papers stay in the car and we are both insured for it. But I once was in a group of peeps stopped in Lille by the CRS and had a sub machine gun stuck in my chest while my mates frantically pleade with them telling them that I was just a stoopid Brit friend of theirs who had come over on a visit. When of course I was just like them, living over there.
I seriously did see myself spending at least one night in the cells for a while as this happened after midnight. and TBH, yessdi is the first time they haven't asked to see the papiers, at least the ID.
I think the fact that we had a "crit'air" sticker on the car proved that we were seriosu peeps who did things by the book as we know of noone else, including Frogs who have one on their car. (Indicates pollution level of the car).

Forgotted to mention that the only real problem would have been the lack of a driving licence on me. That could have caused problems.
Lesson learned. Funnily W was going to leave the house without her bag and I reminded her to take it. Once I realised she would have driven except for the problem with her shoulder.
