When the tap was running, the cold feed into the header tank would flow over the corner, the tank is bowed & lower at one
end. no matter how much I ran all the taps did the water level go lower in the header no water came in through the ball valve ??
it over flowed. Looks like a cold feed from the lower opposite side from the ball valve. ?? Im no plumber so I dont know how
this all works. We have a back boiler system runs off solid fuel.
What a complete pain! Poor you!
Wot about just a new ball cock with its arm bent well down so the old tank can work more or less until you have time to replace that?
Just a thought.
Is it an old brass one, or a more modern plastic diaphragm one?
I've mended both just by replacing the washer or diaphragm.
But that won't help you with the clear up, or the overflow, or the tank.

Its a modern plastic thing looks cheap compared to ones for sale now. Its working fine atm but I will need to replace it
& probably do the insulation properly as its not done the way I thought it was. If you poke your head up it looks all good
until you climb half way along then its only done on the flat ceiling part not going down into the eves.
The certificate is nailed inside the roof. Not worth the paper its written on.
Bin to cleaning wuk today, the firm are moving up the road in January and aren't taking us with them, another kick in the marbles, thanks 2023. The Beloved has been visiting her Pa in Great Yawnmouth, so MaTee helped me out. Trouble is she can't do an average job for the life of her so it has taken an age.
Now installed at my preferred watering hole and enjoying a rather splendid Christmas bap. Turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce and (unexplainably) flat cheese. Was generous and rather delicious.

Feeling I have been dumb. Just noticed you said "header tank" as in the tank that keeps the central heating system topped up.Its a modern plastic thing looks cheap compared to ones for sale now. Its working fine atm but I will need to replace it

I think it might even be called the "expansion tank." That makes more sense as indeed they do have a ball valve and an outlet that pours into the tank, which (sticking my neck out here) comes from the system when the water expands on being heated by the boiler and has to go somewhere rather than blowing up! Ours is a big pipe that goes up the outside of the tank then curves over to let the water fall into the tank.
But again I may be wrong and your ordinary cold water feed tank that is huge and sits in the roof as originally organised Lord Congreve! Is the one you are talking about.

Went to Chichester last night to see the Royal Marines'Band and Chichester Cathedral Choir. Plus a group of 6 close harmony acapella singers.
It was flipping fabulous as usual.
The band leader, in this case there were two, were also a good laugh.
Each year there are more and more wimmins in it. The corp of drums, 5 peeps, 3 were wimmins.
This year the music was more complex and difficult to play than usual. Brilliant.
W and I both used to play brass in bands and I used to sing acapella in an octet so it felt fab to see it done so flipping well.
Cannot recommend them enough. They do play all over the place so many peeps can get to see them, and ticket money goes to charity. (Dunno how much but I'd assume a lot.)

There is another insulated smaller tank next to the one with the ball valve, I think this is the one that is fed from the
back boiler then goes into the lower storage tank with the leccy heating element, id need to spend a bit of time tracing
the pipes & see whats doing what.
Yer Dont insulate under the tank. (Noted)
