Got fished out of the ditch this morning by a local farmer.
We used to have them, too, but were told it would stop providing them as 'people used them' and they were too expensive to maintain!!!!!We don’t get grit boxeswe get little piles of sand placed by side of the road with a stick in the top
Better than that salty grit any day, so are socks and chains

One of our difficulties is that a natural spring comes up at the side of your little lane just as it starts to descend steeply. The water comes over the road and then freezes! To try to alleviate the problem, the council dig out ditches at the sides of the road in order to give a runaway for the water, the water then flows away creating deeper and deeper ditches down both sides of the already narrow country lane. And it runs 365 days a year!
Narrow lane, natural spring, steeply descending hill, frost and then a covering of snow = lethal!

Socks are a great option, and am sure you would be surprised. J
Thanks for that. I've never heard of them but I'll go and investigate these, they look good.
They are good, no weight to them, 5 mins and all tyres socked. Like chains they are there to give you traction. They self center too.
They are a bit of a wriggle to get them off again but far easier than chains in many ways.
