Only did the one LUL job, when I was parachuted in to help sort out a job which had lost its way. That was in 1999/2000. Wasn't impressed with LUL (dis)organisation, and managed to avoid that theatre of war from then-on.
That’s the LUL way… the inverse pyramid of management… one bloke to do the job and the remaining 78 levels are ‘management’…

But when it's just your income in the household whilst the other half is retraining it's eye watering
Not saying it isn't and not trying to diss you in anyway.
We as pensioners have to think twice about it as we both need varifocals. And I have cataracts approaching!
So that is why ours are more money than that.
The frames cost the money though and if you can bear to keep your old frames they might be able to simply get you new lenses and fit them which would be a whole lot cheaper. This is what Wifey does. Me? I just buy a pair with the cheapest frames, within reason, and make them do for ages.
Maybe this'll help next time.;)

I needed special coatings 9n mine for screen work and that's was the main cost. If I changed the lenses with the coating I needed it would work out the same. 40 per lense 35 per coating and the OTC scan as I have eye issues in the family
