...That today (at last) my order of nuts & bolts arrived and so I began the task of drilling out the holes for the bolt cage on the two freewheel sprockets. I would warn anyone trying to follow this construction method that the sprockets are "Cold Forged" and extremely hard and before I was done I had destroyed 1 Tungsten-Carbide tipped 5mm drill bit and a 6mm 4-flute end mill.
The last hole managed to get out of position as a result of the blunting of the drill-bit/end mill.
However, the unit is assembled and bolted up and everything is aligned and a test-fit of a chain around the drive sprocket shows that there in so interference with the chain from the bolt-heads.

Learnings from today:
The BCD of the bolt cage could have been 4mm or more smaller (schoolboy error, the 4mm of the inside 2mm walled tube was added to the calculations when in fact the edges of hte cap-heads and locknuts could have rested much closer to the main casing of the freewheels).

Lovely weather today.
Went to Bournemuff with Wifey to the Chiro as she had a bit of other stuff to do there, so she sat in the car while I went in.

And came out 2 minutes later, furious.
I had an appt at 11:00, or so I thought. "nope, 10:30"
Turned out, once home, that "someone" had hung the calendar back up open on February, of course I did have an appt, same time same day, but last month, the one with 28 days. Why didn't I realise it was on Feb? Cos W has been hanging a decorative bit of kitchen towel-ware off the same hook and it obscured the month word!
Still went to Castle point and the orspicle for her.
While in M&S I was "told" I "HAD" to buy a white shirt.. For the wedding. I sounded off slightly about spending £30 for just one day, and those around, the ladies, thought this was hilarious "Just liike my husband" and the blokes sympathised, "Just like my missus". General laughter, ensued!:D:D:D
Anyway, once back the postie delivered my noo to me head unit.
Really carefully boxed, with it's cage a bit of trim and brand new connectors just in case I need them! Well impressed.
If it wasn't for the fact my left knee is playing up and swollen I'd be out fitting it instead of watching the last couple of rounds of Crufts!
Have a lovely rest of the day folks!:):):)

It looks good, drilling hard metal is always a chore. Solid Carbide drills and mills are expensive but do the job without much of an issue. Cobalt are also good :)

Well done , mate!
Nice to see progress!!!
Appreciate the problems with the hardness of the material you were drilling/milling. what were you using as lubricant?
I ask this as I too seem to come up against this more times than i like, especially when drilling stainless, which seems to work-harden for a pastime.

Thanks, the lube being used was standard cutting oil. The thing is together and it works is hte main thing. I don't need one, I just wanted to see if I could make one with my little Chinese lathe and Toy Milling machine.
And I could! :D :D :D

And more ferry woeso_O Son had to take a load of wooden power poles to Colonsay on Saturday for SSE. Got the 7am boat there arrived around 08.15 and the boat carries on to Oban and returns about 15.30. Boat broke down in Oban and didn’t get fixed till next morning. The islands hotel was shut as well  He managed to get a b&b for the night and luckily the local cafe was having a quiz night and stayed open till 1am serving drink:)
Today the other boat has broked and is waiting on divers to have a look. Probably needing another cork hammered in below the waterline ;)

I use wooden wedges when we put holes in hulls (dont ask) Now I know your going to ask...
