He says he will go "skip-diving" and hopes to find them.
Spend a lot and then tell them it is what you expected as it is what you are used to when working away from home.

His putting it on the skip was his little joke, and it has backfired on him because he has now lost a part and the thing is just fine, it was/is his lack of understanding how to operate it.Some folks are too eager to throw stuff away
I'd chain and lock 'im to the skip and only give him the key when he finds all the bits.
