A 4 jaw is invaluable when machining odd shapes or square stock. Also, if you are doing something precision it is the best solution. I hold an ER32 collet chuck in mine to get repeatability on round stock. Yes it is worth the investment if you take the time to learn how to use it!!
Thanks. I had got the gist that 3-jaw was a "cop-out" and not for anything requiring repeatability after removal insert, but the overhead of a 4-jaw looks (at first glance) a bit daunting. However, I am used to Dial gauges etc. as I use one for truing my bike wheels (something people tell me is way OTT). ;)

I don't think that is OTT, I would do the same! You can use a pointer but if you have an accurate gauge, why not :D
Yes the overhead is there, but once you have the experience, you will be able to dial in very quickly.

I am rather fed-up.

Mate.
My parents were a bricky an a housewife. My mum missed meals so me an my kid brother could eat sometimes. My mum was strict but loving, an my dad was just a proper dad (unless the belt was required, he hated that). Anything me an bruv have is our own work, blood an sweat (an sometimes craft), we've worked, an saved, an then worked some more.
I seriously object to the entitled, gimme, gimme, attitudes young peeps have these days.
You want it? Get of your backside and earn it! Or wait, save and get it later. There's a lot to be said for delayed gratification
I'm just sounding off, but FFS buddy, when are your kids going to grow up and take care of their own responsibilities?

Your biznis of course, I feel better now, hope you do soon :D

I'm all for telling them to F-Off, wait, earn it, pay for it.....but then there's their Mother who just undermines me. Friction all round.
Her view is "because we can, we should"; mine is... "Nobody gifted me an easy time, go earn it". :)

Soooo, I did the hinges today.

Not that it is any of my business but I believe that just giving 'them' everything they want 'just because you have it' is laying up trouble for 'them'. There will come a time when you are not there to 'help' and they will be totally unable to cope with having to live within their means because they have not been taught that skill. Both of you are going to have to come to some agreement in order 'to be cruel to be kind'.
Your sons must be told that the subsidies have ended and it is now time for them to wait until you and your good lady have no further need of the money. They cannot expect to be given large cash presents and then come back for even more and more throughout the year.

Evening all.
Quick read of the days updates

Few things I have learnt today.
Don’t have kids(no chance here we just have mates kids nieces/nephews)
Have separate bank account... yep this is the case but there is also a joint account
If you can’t walk into the shop & purchase what you need with the money you have, don’t ask the parents( we get offered monies from both sides but won’t take it)

now always give the loved one 1 a kiss before bed as it makes the next day better.

A smile don’t cost nothing.

... I am beyond mildly cross.
Wife visits Son (where I have toiled all week) to be told that he has not enough money to do the rest of the required works.
She comes home with "we have to help them" and "we should lend them the money".
This is the same pair that cost me £16k to renew the lease in their last but one place so they could even sell it.; and who just had to have a £15k wedding that they could not pay for and still owe me £13,500 on (after 2 years).
I told the wife I was not interested in burning through my money so he could keep his dozy tart of a wife "happy".
I am sorry to report that loud and angry words have been exchanged.
My suggestion that "if we keep on meekly giving, that cnut will happily keep on taking" did not go down well.
I am rather fed-up.

Id tell em to....

I managed a few hours on "ME" DIY today.
My window-sills/cills are all in place. :)
The LH wall is going to be faced with reclaimed scaffold-boards (pressure-washed of their dirt, and charred to bring out the graining), so I anticipate a sill/ledge on that wall of the same stuff.
Onwards and downwards sideways upwards. :)

Looking superb buddy, my mate fitted reclaimed scaffy boards on his floor & I used a floor sander on it
then oiled the boards with linseed oil it, it looked amazing without being burnt. :)

For anyone who is interested in my Dad's foolproof system for marital harmony to do with money, here it is, for what its worth.

Both partners sit down and, based on annual expenditure, work out how much it costs to live for a year.
Open a joint bank account purely for this, so it pays all bills, food, services, house insurance, mortgage, car insurance etc either for the one joint car or both cars if you need one each. There will need to be a bit of negotiation on this but it isn't too difficult in the end.
So you will come to an annual figure, divide this by twelve, this is what needs to be paid into it per month.
Take both your incomes and as they will be different work out the ratio of one to the other, then pay into the joint account in this ratio from each of the partner's sole account.
This way each pays the bills in ratio to what they earn, the rest becomes pocket money. so the highest earner pays the most but also has the most pocket money.
You can also set up a savings account and again pay in an agreed amount, each month, again in the same proportions.
We did this and it works a dream if unexpected expenses crop up.
We have found this method works like a dream.

BUT it does tend to work best where each partner has a reasonable income. If the balance of incomes between both partners is wildly different it cannot work as the one who earns the least will constantly feel cheated.
For most of our working lives Wifey earned twice what I earned, but bizarrely now my pension is better than all of hers. But we still stick to it and it still works.
It even worked when my ex and I divided the spoils of our divorce in proportion to what we had done for the 7 years of our marriage. And yes we did keep books, again summat taught me by my Dad the accountant!
I leave this with you while I run and get my steel helmet!;)
And Dan in your shoes I would have done exactly what you did!

We used to have a joint account, had the much the same situation as she would lend money
out to whoever needed & never get it back  plus go ott on other things like street BBQ's
I wouldnt mind but most are stingy fook pigs who are tighter than two coats of paint...
anyhoo now we have separate accounts all the bills come out the misses account
but they are halved & we have our own money an pay half for all housey things.
Simple easy & it works :):)
