Hard Drive

Here’s a good one to chew the cud on. And it may be of interest to others.

Having just driven from the UK, I’m in another country. And just as the day’s journey was almost complete I discovered our fuel-pump was leaking.
I carry an assortment of tools and spares, which included a pump - recently overhauled.

I was prepared to fit our spare pump, but my wife was more cautious. If I did, we would be left without a serviceable spare, she said. And while we were still in Europe (Spain) why don’t we buy a replacement and fit it instead, thereby retaining our spare – just in case. I couldn't argue.

I searched Ebay and found three possibilities. Two I discounted, for various reasons, whilethe third seemed good-to-go. I tried to buy a pump from the 3rd, but they wouldn’t post it to Spain. I wrote to them, explaining my situation and the fact their Ebay advert said to contact them for P&P to another country other than the UK. A common enough scenario.

I looked at their Ebay ad’ again, and their list of Excluded countries included, believe it or not, the UK, along with almost every other country on the planet. I queried this, with humour, informing them I only needed the P&P for Spain. And in a round-about way they said, DHL would quote P&P when ordering a pump.

I tried to buy one, three times, with the same reappearing message, the seller will not post to Spain. I wrote to them, again, telling them what was happening and might they do something to help me buy a pump?

Their next message was, and I quote,

Hi Going off your comments we really dont want your business now so we are going to block you as a buyer. Get a pump elsewhere.

Eh?

And my Plan B, which was on the cards, was to get one delivered to a family member, in the UK, and get them to forward it to me. That is now a no-go. The seller lost a sale and they couldn’t give a toss.

Which forced me to go down another road. Today, I removed the leaking pump and discovered the fault. It was a single round-rubber seal. I’ll include a photo, if I can.
DSCF1267.JPG Here it is.

From my spares box, I fitted a new seal and the pump is back together. I’ll refit it tomorrow. It’s so hot here (even in the shade of two large walnut trees) I can only work in the morning.

In a way, the seller who banned me has helped in the financial term. But their Ebay advert is not only misleading and badly organised; it also suggests - to me, there is something not quite right there. I think their lights are on, but there is no-one in. As for their pumps? The jury is out on that one!

Hopefully, after tomorrow, we’ll be on our way again – less a seal.

Most car spares for sale come from wreckers.
I guess they wouldn't be renowned for their generosity of spirit, helpfulness or computer skills.
A wild generalisation I know but tell me if I'm wrong.

I'm now inAfrica, heading for a country where French vehicles are dominant! Not Freelanders. So spares are few and impossible to get.
My repair was excellent and all is well.
I'm intrigued by the answers from some, though.
I've been in the Sahara before and know its limitations. So, please, everyone who has responded as If I lack some sense, consider driving across an area where there are no wreckers, spares, Halfords, etc. Than think again.
As for the pump seller that refused to send me a pump? My answer is simple. Use a recommended supplier and no-one on Ebay. You'll get what you pay for.
I'm presently beneath a palm tree, enjoying a G&T. No ice though.

But once you fit it you haven't got a spare. If you've still got a big trip ahead that may be more remote, then sounds reasonably prudent to me.
Thanks, Grumpy, and to the other likes. You're well ahead of the pack.
I'm now on alert for snakes. Goats we can manage. Lol

Oh, I'm not going to be in touch again, for a long time. Thanks to all. Chin-chin.

That’s quite a trip enjoy it and we expect pics:D
G&Ts we could do under a palm tree, but M would be up it (probably me covered in G&T) if a snake came into view.

where are you heading?
Good luck.

The High pressure Fuel pump has three small metal (I’m not sure what to call them ) seal carriers between the cylinder--heads and main bodies.

There are two hard white plastic seals, and two rubber, one of each.

I have learned to place the seals onto the metal intrusions first, and not into the cylinder-head and body cavities first.

I fitted the seals onto the metal intrusion, with a slick of grease over the seals to allow the things to fit without damage. Then inserted the intrusion into the main body first, followed by the head as it was lowered. The grease enabled the connection easily and without damage.

This was my fault, in the past. For some reason the seals were damaged, and the pump leaked.

Originally, I pressed the seals into the head and body with a blunt object, before pressing the cylinder head over and onto the main body. That seemed to cause some damage.

If there are others who can describe what I’ve written better, please do.
The pump seller and me.

Your previous message

Ah, that's such a pity because I was about to buy one and get it delivered to a UK address for forwarding to myself.
Oh well.
Have a nice day.

If that's the attitude of the seller, they don't deserve you money. Tell everyone how they've behaved, so people think twice before spend their money with them too.

Enjoy the trip.

Interesting thread! If it were me, I'd have used my spare and looked at servicing/repairing the one that came off, that becoming the spare

From yesterday, just sayin...

Man fights, kills one of world's deadliest snakes while driving on Australian highway

A police officer in Australia who pulled over a driver for speeding discovered the man had a pretty good excuse - he'd just fought off a deadly snake and was racing to the hospital.

A 27-year-old Gladstone man identified only as "Jimmy" was driving about 100 kilometres an hour on a highway west of Calliope in Queensland last month when he spotted an "angry" brown snake slithering through the gear stick towards his leg, according to a release from police.

"I just started to brake," Jimmy said in a video released by police Tuesday. "...And the more I moved my legs ... it just started to wrap around me. Its head just started striking at the (driver's seat) chair, between my legs."

Jimmy said he used a seat belt and a knife to fight off the reptile while trying to stop the vehicle.
