Oh, what a surprise- my l322 td6 gearbox has developed an issue just short of 95k miles! Who would have thought it?!
Driving home from work today, one mile from home the 'trans failsafe mode' flashes up. Stays in third til I get home, park up, turn engine off, then on, now attempt to select drive and reverse- just revs and doesn't go anywhere!
Oh I love my life- come on then guys gimme some help- am I looking at a new gearbox or recon torque converter? Anyone down Cornwall/Devon that is in the know?
Shall I go down to my local Halifax to take a mortgage out for the repairs or sell my left kidney?

Too late. New/recon gearbox and torque convertor needed, better sell your kidney and take out a mortgage. Read the RS 2000 custom thread

So... have you got a synopsis of what is said there. I am thinking I should be asking for a reconditioned torque converter, new LR oil cooler & LR filter + new oil. Am I right in saying that the gearbox itself is not really the issue here?
Your help is much appreciated!

sadly you will need a recon box,t/c,new oil cooler & cooler pipes to get somewhere close to future reliability,and yes you will have to sell a kidney,hose,dog,etc budget for 1.5k-2+K:amen:

It sounds like you have the age old problem suffered by many an L322 TD6 owner.

The TC most likely has internally exploded and sent swarf and debris on a wrecking spree through your gearbox's internalls

The nett result is Trans-Fail, stuck in 3rd, no drive forward or reverse unless you rev the t*ts of the engine

The potential for damage due to swarf is a knackered valve solenoid block, gears, rotors and if you have damaged the gearbox casing then you will not have a suitable unit for anyone to recon your box

Also swarf will be in your oil cooler and will need replacing unless you can guarantee it is spotless inside and not 1 piece of swarf is left in there (impossible to do) or the box has a major potential to fail after rebuild

If you read my 2 threads I have opted for a new TC BEFORE my current one failed

Thread 2 is the stripping of my gearbox and it was found that the oil was heavily contaminated with 88,000 miles worth of worn TC friction plates and 1 snapped accumulator spring

So NO INTERNAL damage was suffered in the solenoid block or any internal components

Sadly for you the option of just a TC is no longer there and you are into the full rebuild costs as so many others before you have suffered

I would budget between £2000 - £3000 to do the job properly

TC = £300
Oil = £15 per litre = £150
Cooler (genuine only) = £210
Filter and sump gasket (genuine) = £140

So the above are £800 BEFORE the box is removed and stripped for inspection and excludes labour

Good luck

+1 and DONT DRIVE IT NO MORE if you break the casing it will not be eligable for recon so then its 4k atleast

I see, thanks. So recon gearbox, torque converter, oil cooler pipes, LR oil cooler and trans oil. Just out of interest- what do you think mine would be worth with a gearbox error. Good history 95k miles? Basically what i am thinking is should I sell it or repair it.

again its a real sad story,is there anyone by you who can take this job on cause once replaced you have a known good range and piece of mind,it can be done by people close here as myself and dave rs2000 have found, but you are 250 miles from midlands but again it could be collected on a low loader etc worth a thought:(

That is sad news, iv just bought a 2003 td6 hse and it had a gearbox problem 2000 miles ago, the receipt was from a gearbox specialist and it said new torque converter fitted and gearbox inspected, the total cost on the receipt was £2000, there was also another receipt for 1000 miles later for a new stepper motor at a cost of £1000 so Im Hoping I won't have any gearbox problems in my ownership, the gearbox seems the most expensive fault on these cars, if it happened to me I would probably have to sell up, I think you would be looking at £6-7k if you where to sell, good luck, not the best thing Santa could have brought you
